Although
Len has been very successful throughout his F3C competitive
career, he is also as much a modeler as he is a pilot.
He enjoys developing his own fuselages and specialty parts
for his models. Len does all of his own building, modification,
painting, and setup on his models. "I just would
not get the same enjoyment out of the hobby if I did not
build the models I am flying," said Sabato. "My
interest in RC Helicopters started at the age of 5 when
my father (Len Sr.) designed and developed his first helicopter,
a fixed-pitch RC Jet Ranger way back in 1971." The
model was manufactured during 1972 and 1973 under the
brand name "RC Helicopters Inc.," and the prototype
model is on permanent display at the AMA National Aero
Modeling Museum.
Len
states, "The pinnacle of my flying career to date
was making the 2003 USA F3C Worlds team! I had been working
towards this goal actively since my return to contest
flying in 1998, and had been dreaming about making the
team since the late 1980's. Making the team and being
able to compete at the World Championships was at the
very least a once in a lifetime experience that I will
never forget."
Len
is currently preparing 3 identical Vigor CS Heli's to
complete with his own design "Eclipse" fuselages
with retractable landing skids for the 2004 F3C contest
season, and with some luck, a spot on the 2005 USA F3C
Team for the next World Championships in Spain.
