Hangar 9's new Aspire was designed by World-class TOC pilot Mike McConville. Mike said that a lot of attention was given to turning handling and performance, which is important because when flying in a thermal, it's necessary to maintain a constant bank angle and turn radius once the thermal is cored.
With some sailplanes, you need to constantly give inputs (sometimes even opposite rudder) to maintain a constant circle, and you spend more time concentrating on flying than staying in lift. Not so with the Aspire when you find lift, all you need to do is bank to the desired angle and then pull and hold some up elevator. The Aspire will maintain a constant circle with very little rudder correction needed. This leaves you free to concentrate on exactly where the lift is the strongest and work over in that direction. It's surprising how fewer thermals you fly out of when you're concentrating on where they are rather than keeping the airplane in the right place.
The Aspire features a modified Selig 7037 airfoil that gives great penetration performance, but slows down well for thermaling and landings. An adjustable tow-hook allows for nearly 1 adjustment. In the forward position, stable hands-off launches are achieved, while in the rearward position higher launches are possible with slightly less launch stability. And the Aspire's select all-wood construction weighs in at 44 oz. with standard servos and 600mAh pack.
