    Item Description:

This is a vintage (NOS/NIB) Balsa USA Sopwith Pup Kit. This is not the 're-engineered' kit. Comes in two big boxes weighing 16 pounds each (original weight sticker on box). Boxes are in very good+ condition as is contents. It appears that all plans, wood, and instructions are there. One set of written instructions are faded but I managed to scan and change the contrast so that they are readable. Will send a PDF copy.

Current model from Balsa USA goes for $705. SELLING PRICE IS $450 – LOCAL PICK UP – CASH. Will travel a reasonable distance to exchange. SOLD AS IS - NO RETURNS. If you like it then buy it before someone else does.

I have a NIB/NOS Zenoah G62 that is also available that I will negoiate a price on. It is not listed on RCU yet.

PLEASE NO LOOKIE-LOUS or last second low-ball offers. Just want to clear out the garage without hassles.

FYI: NOS = New Old Stock. NIB = New In Box.

From BALSA USA WEBSITE: β€˜On February 9, 1916, Herbert Smith's small 80 hp single seat Fighting Scout Passed its acceptance tests and was cleared for production by the Sopwith Aviation Co. LTD. The Sopwith Pup sow combat on every major front of World War I and performed almost every duty asked of a combat aircraft. Along with the Pup's combat success, it was also a pioneering aircraft of Naval shipboard aviation. The Pup was one of the first aircraft to successfully take off and land on a ship at sea, one of the first aircraft to experiment with arresting gear for shipboard landings, and one of the first aircraft to engage in aerial combat after being launched from a ship at sea. However, you should realize the real key to the Pup's success was its outstanding flight characteristics.’

NOS = New-Old Stock. Something that NEW, not used, but because of its date of manufacture it is OLD. Any ads use this to describe items and are 'New in a Box' but because of its age 'Old' but still new.

NIB = New In Box. This airplane is new, unused, in the box.

    Hope this helps.

This is a two box kit. I saw one advertised recently as a '2 boxed' set. I should have photographed the box end that said '1 of 2' but instead I used the box end to identify the kit's name.

This is an 'older kit' and as such it was packaged/delivered as a 2-box kit when manufacturered. I identified the kit in the ad as
    1) NOS (New-Old Stock) and NIB (New In Box).
    2) Vintage
    3) not the 're-engineered' kit currently advertised
I would say that this is a pre-2000 kit but could not find anything to substantiate it as such.

I would not compare this kit with the current kit or what is provided in the current kit because of it age. I haven't looked but an engine cowl should be available from Fiberglass Specialties (perhaps at the time of manufacture this was an optional item?).

The boxes are full of WOOD and I did not dig around into to box. The parts that you question may be at the bottom of the box. I was told it was a complete kit when purchased. I have a Nosen Giant P51 which was in one box including a canopy. Another kit that I handled had the canopy packaged separately and boxed differently.

I'll have to dig through the boxes to find what you are looking for. I'll try to do that today. But I did copy from Balsa USA what the current kit has and will note what I found or know which can change once I go more deeply into the kit. I may lower the price accordingly. Here is what I know already.

    Laser Cut ------------------------NO
    Full sized Rolled Plans-----------YES
    Extensive Hardware Package---CURRENTLY UNKNOWN
    Scale Flying Wires---------------CURRENTLY UNKNOWN
    Separate Plug-In Wing Panels---CURRENTLY UNKNOWN

Pre Bent Wire Cabane Struts----CURRENTLY UNKNOWN
    Aluminum Cowl-------------------NO
    Scale Functional Landing Gear--CURRENTLY UNKNOWN
    Scale Functional Tail Skid-------CURRENTLY UNKNOWN
Updated Manual with over 400 Detailed Photo---? FOUND 2 INSTRUCTION MANAULS, TYPED, VERY LIMITED PHOTOS.

I'll try to take more photos and send them to you if needed. Just opening the box and pulling out the cardboard tray was difficult. Give me a few days to investigate. Contact me if you have anymore questions. Thanks - Ed.

    Art,
Yesterday I spent several hours going through the kit because of you questions. I literally separated and grouped all of the wood. I stand corrected on my ad and will be cancelling it today because the kit is not complete. I bought this kit about 5 years ago from a club member who has since passed. Using his information I listed it as 'complete' but it appears that it is not. I don't think me meant to scam me but probably bought the kit and never opened it like me until now. I did not inspect the kit as I should have relying on the club member's word.

    So far there is NO
    - aluminum cowl
    - no aluminum parts
    - no hardware (hinges, screws, horns, etc.
    - no landing gear wire
    - no wire or any kind

    I do have
    - 7 pages of pages
    - 2 instruction manuals , 12 pages long
    - tons of dimension stock
    - die-cut sheets
    - flat stock
    - redwood dimension stock
    - machined hardwood
    - Two windshield sheets
    - 4 pcs lite plywood (firewall, etc)
    - 2 pcs lite plywood for sides

I plan to inventory the parts item by item. It will be difficult for the Die-Cut sheets since they are not individually marked. All I have is a description to go by. Unlike other kits that give a separate sheet of the individually drawn parts I do not have anything like that and referring to the plans is not so easy.

The Balsa USA website says that they have an instruction manual with 400 photos. The manual written manual that I have is only 10 pages long typed, and 3 pages of B/W photos. I may contact them to see if they sell or make the manual available as a PDF online.

I am going to rethink my position on the kit and inventory what I have, item by item. By any account I figure that I have at least $150-$200 in balsa wood (excluding die-cut parts). I going to identify the die-cut parts as best that I can. My belief is that I have all of the wood parts (sheeting, dimensions lumber, machined lumber) for the kit.

I will either list what I have and sell as a partial kit, or keep the wood for personal shop use. Haven't made up my mind yet.

I you want I can contact you later to let you know what I have found. Feel free to contact me.

    Ed

    Hi Ed
Let me know what you decide to do. Balsa USA hasn't used redwood in the pup kit for a long, long time - early 90's, maybe even earlier. They changed wood from redwood to bass wood and substituted bass wood for balsa in a couple of places but they didn't make any engineering changes to the kit until this past year.
All that being said, I might be interested in the partial kits - they would make great kit bashing projects.
    Cheers, Art
