Exhaust kits are available to fit almost all size Mustangs from 1/7 scale up to 1/4 scale ... see below.
These are the most realistic looking exhaust manifolds and are available for most Merlin powered Mustang models - whether they are scratch built, builder kits, ARC or ARF. A Mustang's exhaust system is one of its distinctive features, yet it's very hard to do them so they look right. These prefabricated kits are correctly scaled, easy to assemble.
Developed from scale sources, each exhaust kit is as close to scale as practical. Stacks are spaced exactly and at the correct angles rearward and downward. A small precision relief around the base of each exhaust stack creates the illusion that the shroud is sheet metal. All this is built into the cast shrouds along with depth stops for the kit's pre-cut brass exhaust stacks.
You'll have to paint exhaust streaking on the fuselage however - these non-functional exhaust systems just look real.
How realistic are they? Compare the picture of the full scale 'Obsession' below with any of the kit installations.
Some fitting is required to match the shrouds to you cowl. The process is easy and detailed in the instructions. The shrouds can be installed either during construction or after your Mustang is finished. Attached to the surface of the cowl, the manifolds normally won't interfere with the mounting of the cowl or with your engine installation. With simple modifications they can be mounted inside full glass cowls for additional realism.
The base of the individual exhaust stacks can be opened into the engine compartment to vent additional cooling air (most kits). The Top Flite GS Mustang surface mount kit adds approximately 2 ozs (total) compared to the vacuum formed kit parts. Larger kits and smaller installations vary.
Each kit includes everything needed for installation including two cast resin shrouds, 12 brass exhaust stacks pre-cut to length, comprehensive illustrated instructions, alignment jigs (where needed), material used for forming the bands on the tips of the exhaust stacks - even a tool for masking the exhaust stacks for painting. Assembly and installation is straight forward and fully explained in the illustrated instructions, leaving you time to spend time painting them as realistically as you want.

Top Flite Giant Scale (1/5 scale) $40 Mustang - all w/ glass cowl. This kit also fits the Gold Series kits with the balsa top cowl. The shrouds can be surface mounted or mounted from inside the cowl (inside mounting requires modification to the front fuselage sides).
Versions are also available to fit the 1/5 scale Platt (81 span), Pica (89 span), Hangar 9 '150', Century Jet Models and Aerotech kits.
