Well, the Hacker Funny flies great! Way-y-y-y-y- overpowered with the .074, it's a riot. Need to mix in some throttle/elevator trim. Large video on the iPad and I have to figure out how to upload it.. won;t let me mail it.

I read a comment somewhere about how grossly inefficient the step up regulators are, so I was curious. The 600 mAh 1S was charged yesterday morning, then I used some juice setting up the radio yesterday and this morning dialing in throws and range check, plus one ground run of the engine. Then the test flight this evening, 3:30 long.
So I put the battery on the charger this evening at 1C – it almost immediately showed 4.20V and the charge rate dropped to 0.2A. So I left it and had dinner. When done, the charger had output 60mAh. So the battery accepted some fraction of that to top up the charge, and some fraction of that figure again was the amount actually consumed on the maiden flight.
Therefore.. I don’t think there is a major problem with inefficiency or any worry about Rx battery capacity here.

It sure does fly - fly - fly even with the power chopped...!
Would a .049 balance that design without any ballast..?
I just saw your comment about the 1 cell battery....that's good to know. I will give it a try.
It isn't THAT much of a step up. I notice the capacitors on the regulator, they must be for handling any rapid current draw needs. You mentioned that you beef up the wiring a little bit..?

No, no wiring change. Maybe you're thinking of me going on about bracing the antenna on the lemon Rx receivers I keep using lately.
I have HS65HB's on R/E, and an old GWS micro on the throttle.
176 sq in and 13.4 oz., 11oz/ft^2
I'll try to get another data point after putting in more than one flight on a fresh battery. I have a micro switch harness between the Lipo and the regulator, and the regulator plugged into the Rx. So I can use the charge plug for the battery and no trickle current drain on the battery to forget about and kill the LiPo (done that before with plug-the-cable-into-the-Rx type switches..).

I laid up conforming saddles for the top of each of the lower wings. Painter's tape, PVA, two layers of 3oz glass 1" wide and epoxy. I traced the wing saddles from the fuselage which gives a perfect template for interplane struts when everything is square. So when the glass saddles are cured up, I'll bond them to the ply interplanes which at the top of course just have a flat plate due to the French curve over a straight line and round the LE airfoil. Then in true Sunday flier fashion I'll use a couple of #32 bands to lock them to the wings. Then, I'll feel safe horsing it around at speed. The vertical is hilarious!

If there's a slow way to do something, I'll find it!
Actually this was quick and easy, and I liked the idea of the perfect saddle fit - after all this thing is so aerodynamically slick otherwise.. don't want to spoil the sleek lines.
Merciless winds today so far.. maybe evening will have a window of opportunity.

Hi MJD,
A biplane with 'retracts'?
From the video, it looks like a semi/semi scale Beech 'Stagger, ing'... Performance wise....
Dad sent three e-mails with photos...
(the Maralyn Crew will like his 'photo recconno-sense'...)
Cheers.

Yeah, I'm torn on the issue of gear, but I could give it cool CF struts and parkie wheels for a penalty of maybe 1/2oz. Wire cable skid to protect the elev horn. Won't hurt the climb rate any.. it was pretty bouncy and skittery on that flight, needs throttle/elev mixing, and the wings could have been flexing too.
I was puzzled by some erratic mixture behavior (the engine quit on that first flight with over 1/2 tank left). So this evening I hid from the elements under the deck, and with some ground running found out I had an intermittent air leak at the fuel inlet due to getting around the darn muffler with as little extra tubing as possible. So I trimmed it back, added a coupling and made a more reasonable bend. Seems to run better now.. I'm noticing there is a broad region after it breaks clean where the top end is fine but the low end goes rich. But it takes a while to get to peak so seems there is a compromise setting in the middle. The engine no doubt needs some time too. I better go find an .074 thread to see what I should expect for idle, can't remember.
Maybe tomorrow the $#?%&^@ winds will let up..

That's a totally impressive little plane! Love the video! PM sent.

This thing has me all stoked about bipes again (I am easily distracted). So I want to finish off the .15 bipe now.. this is inspired by the Baby Bipe from way back. The image is a bit small. Idea is a light structure (hope for
