Little [and big] diesel engines get real sooty, and have preignition issues. You can reach through the exhaust port of a PAW, and just flick off the build up with a #11 blade. A glow engine in the real large sizes, especially 4 strokes, can get sooty, but I haven't seen any small engines get bad enough to cause any concern.
