Picture upload?
I've just spent about an hour trying to learn how to post pictures. No luck. I think my files are too big but I can't figure out how to make them smaller. I've got four photo editers but I'm not very skilled with any of them.

RE: Picture upload?
I use PhotoShop so I'm not sure about other programs but here's how I do it. Load the picture, chose "Image Size" from the Image menu and a box pops up with the existing size of the image. I type in 640 in the width box and the program reduces the height to 480. Then I choose "Save As" and give it a new file name like "my picture small.jpg" and the program saves it in the new 640x480 size. The original larger image isn't disturbed but the new, smaller one will load on the forum fine. Works for me!

If you don't have photoshop you can download kodak easyshare free from kodak. Then you can export the pictures and in the export menu choose 'best for web' as the size and jpeg as the type..
Similar process in many image programs.. look for 'export' in the menus..

I use ACDsee 6.0, not free but excellent to use. Right click on the image in the ACDSee viewer and select edit. Select resize and then presets-half size to reduce the physical size if the image fills the screen. When saving a dialog box opens and allows to save the jpeg to any level of compression. Easier to do than it seems.
I also use it to resize poorly scanned plans, making them %300 larger, clean up the file in editor, save and then to Tile Print. It can save an almost unusable plan, usually the plans downloaded as jpgs from the web are too small to give any quality.

Remember, there are two different things to consider. One is file size which refers to the number of bytes a file takes up on a disk. The other is image size which - in the case of raster images like jpgs - refers to the dimension of the image in pixels. For RCU I wouldn't go bigger than 800 pixels for your largest dimension. And, as for file size I would stay under 100K. DICKEYBIRD's 640x480 is good for most people's monitor resolution settings (they won't have to scroll to see the whole image). But if you force the file size down too far - say below 20K for an 800 pixel image - the quality will most likely really start to suffer.

I managed to resize some photos with help from you guys, but I still haven't figured out the posting part. My attempt at an avatar came out sorta fuzzy and I started out with a four megapixel photo. Do photos need to be hosted somewhere before they can be added here?

I usually load straight off my digital camera, and size the pics on the camera before loading......other pics I browse off my hard drive, using the browse option..most of my pics are 1240 x 640 size and load fairly fast. somethimes you just have to mess around a bit to get what you want.

I read someplace that RCU automatically sizes the pictures. Mine post sometimes and sometimes not. There are a couple of ways of getting pictures on. Hadn't posted in a while and forgot how. Fiddled around and got the picture on in a very non professional way.

RE: Picture upload?
I've posted dozens of pics on this site, but today i can't get anything to upload.
Using Opera I get:
Request object error 'ASP 0104 : 80004005'
Operation not Allowed
/forum/js/PGDUpload.asp, line 169
Using IE I get a typically helpful MicroSoft error message saying to check with the software vendor...
Interesting...
