What 1/2 A engines are currently in production and for sale?
I was just told Norvel is no longer communicating with Sig and then I tried to buy a surestart and found them sold out as well. What gives?

There's really only the AP .061 and the Thunder Tiger .07.
I suppose the Toki .05 could be converted, but it's a bit pricey.

Bipe,
Don't forget that there is an airplane version of the Toki 05 which is the same as the car engine. I think Easy Tiger eas thinking about importing them. In testing he found them to be heavy and underpowered.

I didn't know, or if I did then I fogot, about the airplane version. Too bad about the weight and power.
Edit:
I found the thread - now I remember.

Brodak is importing a MK II version from one of the former Soviet republics -- a replacement for the CS (Chinese manufacture). It is my understanding that it's the same company that builds his .25 and .40.
I've seen pictures, but no run data on the MK II.

If you get a Brodak MkII, make CERTAIN you tear it down and clean it before you run it. I found metal dust in mine.

Thanks for the info, guys. There are more out there than I realized. It is surprising to see what they charge for these little guys. Norvel left a hole.

Pity the the new Mk 2 Brodak doesn't come with a throttle or a muffler. I put an old Norvel muffler up against one today and it would proberbly work with a little wittlin'

I had wondered if the boss on the exhaust port would fit the NORVEL or AP muffler -- it would certainly help if you needed muffler pressure or noise reduction.
Do you have any run data -- several folks seem to have one of these engines, but I can't find any tach numbers anywhere. How difficult would it be to wrench an AP carb onto the MK II?

The fact that there hasn't been any run data, [just anecdotal comparisons to descriptive words in our vocabularies] leads me to believe that this sucker will have a hard time getting a Gentle Lady to 300 feet.

I heered somewheres that sumwun got around 17,800 on 5x3 and 25% - I don'trecall the exact numbers, but it was in that general area. I think it would perform much better with a turbo head or a nelson plug. Stock, it uses a standard short plug.

I haven't waddled it into the bathroom and put it on the scales yet, but I think it might a wee bit heavy too. After tearing it down to inspect it (and make the 3D CAD model) I must say I'm not terribly impressed by it.

Brodak is a smart business man. He has built a miniature dynasty in a niche of the hobby that was almost dead. So why would he put his name on this engine? C/L flyers want light equipment and their engines need to turn large diameter props. So we are talking about an engine that can turn a 6x2 or 6x3 well enough to do the stunt pattern with a plane that I'm guessing weighs about half a pound. Get out your thrust calculator for a 6 inch prop and figure out what a safe target rpm would be for this task, bear in mind that you need enough reserve power to overcome the drag of the lines and that vertical performance needs to be effortless.

Looks like that engne only has a firewall mount... Anybody have experience with one? Are they as good as the norvel .074's?

RE: What 1/2 A engines are currently in production and for sale?
I have experience with both, and the TT .07 isn't even close to the Norvel .074 for power, fuel economy or lightness.

I know that technically it is not a 1/2a, but the OS .10LA is a great little engine for 1/2a sized planes. I ran one on a Herr Little Extra, and it hauled it around rather well.
