What book was this?
Maybe 20 years ago I was in a hobby shop, and there was a book on the shelf with a title something like "What to do with the .049 engine after you crash your Cox model".

It had perhaps 10 or a dozen 1/2 designs, C/L mostly, but at least one FF in the form of a single bladed helicopter.

For one reason or another I didn't buy the book, and it was gone when I went back. Anyone know the real title of this book and/or where I might find a copy?<br type="_moz" />

RE: What book was this?
No, but the helicopter was likely a Charybdis. Much fun for a bit of sheet balsa, highly recommended.

Go to YT and search "Charybdis" or videos by MrClean417.

And I hope you find that book!

Give this one a look:

8 Easy Projects For 1/2a Engines by Ken Willard 1985
It seems to be out of print... You can find a picture of the cover at openlibrary.org
an you can find a hard copy at 11 locations around the country at worldcat.org
I live 346 miles from the nearest copy:(

RE: What book was this?
My old friend from high school had that Ken Willard book. I also have not one, but two original copies of the American Aircraft Modeler magazine that featured the Charybdis - and many AAM mags had a great column called "for the tenderfoot" that often featured 020 to 049 powered planes.

I also have an old hard cover Popular MEchanics encyclopedia book from the early 80's that also featured a bunch of projects for 1/2A engines.

RE: What book was this?
It's the Ken Willard book, it's a lot of fun. Charybdis, flying rags, flight of 4, hovercraft, lots of goodies. My 1/2A Charybdis was a SIG 1/2A wing with a Black Widow on it. I flew the snot out of that thing 10 years ago. Flew the flying rag a bunch too till it shot between me and a buddies head and smacked into the safety fence behind us. If it weren't for that fence I would have been buying a windshield for my buddies truck.

While it's still in the archives, heres my webpage on the Charybdis from the Waybackmachine.

Kirkland Lake, ON Canada to the state of Virginia is more like 1000 miles (or just shy of 1600 km's)

And, I never updated my profile but I live in Timmins now, and thats another 100 miles further North West.

PS Vicman, I need to get that book out first..

RE: What book was this?
Thanks again for the info.  I found a copy via alibris.  Expensive, but worth it to stop kicking myself over not buying it years ago.  <div>
</div><div>Some of the projects use foam core, like posterboard but with styrene faces instead of paper.  I'm not finding a current source for that stuff.   Anybody know if depron or fan fold foam would be similar enough?</div>

RE: What book was this?
Check the SPAD area in these forums, the stuff is available still. I have seen it in craft shops and I have seen SPAD airplanes made from it. The fellow who runs mudduck aviation makes planes out of it too.
