Celebrated a beautiful early spring day with – so far - 11 flights on the TD .020 SparrowHawk foamie.. From it’s humble, careless origins throwing together a quick foamie conversion for some .02 stick time, it ended up flying remarkably well and is quite fun. I caught some lift on glide #4, rode that for a couple of minutes before diving out of the road of some dork buzzing over the village at about 700’ AGL in a Bonanza. Irresponsible private pilots having fun on a nice day.. how dare they! :o

This thing will cut figure 8’s and rolling circles and all sorts of antics, there’s plenty of power on tap. The snaps are hard on fuel draw, quit before it does. Tried something on a whim after the first flight. I mixed the throttle stick to elevator at 15%, cranked in a bunch of subtrim, and now the throttle is my trim lever – full forward for level power flight, full back for soaring. Works great, but I keep grabbing throttle in the maneuvers, though the rpm doesn’t seem to change much.

This is the beautiful silver case TD that I got from CrossCheck. Dave, I hope your ears were buzzing this morning! Sweet engine, had 2-3 first flip starts. Springs are for kids.

Last three flights I used the “speed” prop – a Driskill combat prop (the shorter one with two CF strands, I never remember the specs) trimmed to 3.8” diameter. Ran great, there was a pick up in airspeed too, but I can’t quantify it.

6 of Bernie's new batch of props came in - visually they look ok thus far.

Not gold tank. The Al parts are not gold anodized - it is '60's vintage.

I highly recommend you do the 180 degree trace and track exercise on the new props before you bolt one on a TD.

Yea I have 3 pee wee silver tanks with thimble dome written on them - I thought you had a TD .020 with a silver fuel tank.
The piston fit is much better I rob the cylinder pistons for my TD's

We went back into the Ice Age with a little 15 minute "hale storm" today.
If I ever stumbled into a deal on a .020 I might try a ARF foamie as well.

The performance of this thing has me real stoked to do a minimalist cross section TD .020 pattern type jobbie. To the BatCAD..

No flying today, too windy. But nice enough to run 1/2A engines on the back deck. Took the AME .061 out, having pulled the Cox 5-3 and fit a Driskill combat prop (the all fiberglass 5” dia one.. maybe 2.75” pitch or so?) in deference to the advice they like to spin.

15% nitro, 20% total oil instead of 25% nitro as I had run before.

It is clear it likes the lighter shaft load, the overall handling just transformed. These were, I think, runs 4 and 5 on the engine. First run a rich crackly 2-stroke at 21,700. Throttled down briefly a couple of times, it was smooth and clear down low, and transitioned very well given the fat top end. Wow, liking it so far. Run 5 leaned just a little, but lots left, with occasional strong peaks.. if the batteries hadn’t faded in the tach I’d have a number but now it was cleaned up a bit and sounding very content a good deal faster than run 4. The occasional pinch peak was very strong. Throttle response was quite good, not what I had expected considering what I had heard in the past about AME’s. So a good candidate for a cleaned up classic sport pattern 1/2A model for example. Away with the fat 2415+ ACE airfoil.. :cool:

Are the piston & cylinder the same on the Pee Wee and TD?

I finally found the data on the two 1/2A combat props I have a few of, these came from Larry Driskill:

>KT11 - 5.25 X 2.50 composite propeller (fiberglass)

>KT12 - 5.00 X 2.75 composite propeller (carbon fiber)

The KT-11 is the prop my Profi .061 turned at 34k even on the first run, rich 2c. Also the prop I have on the AME .061 r/c at the moment, not quite spinning that fast.

So this prop is a 3.8 x 2.75. To my ears it turns maybe a few hundred rpm higher than the 4.5x2 on the ground. Got new batteries in the tach now, I’ll get numbers next time out. It seems to work very well, airspeed is visibly up over the 4.5x2, performance is zippy. I’ll be getting a GoPro real soon, so can do the helmet cam thing and get some video finally.

Yes they are, in the past I have bought Pee Wees for the glow plug, piston /cylinder and exhaust throttle. In general if those part where bought separately they tend to be a reasonable buy when going for the entire engine. Its the only way you can snag the throttle for future 3ch projects. On large hub props I use the 1/2A spinner can grind down the top of the spinner till when stood up next to the .020 they are the same height. Second stage of the mod is reshaping the spinner to narrow down and match the bolt head of the .020. Covering up that fat draggy over sized 1/2A hub will help give you some more rpm at speed. If you have a spring starter TD then cox makes the rubber spinners originally for the Lil Stinker .020 powered CL plane and the 4 x .2.5 prop. The finished aluminum spinner takes on the shape of the queen bee spinner.

It was LHS bought ~1970(?) for my Dad's 'pendulum control' FF BirdDog, that never got done. (R/C learning got in the way.:D)
Almost made it into a framed up CL 'Little Dancer', but I was more into .35 CL at the time...
Bench ran, two times. I have a feeling that Cox engines build up a 'potential' energy until, it is ready to be 'unleashed'...:cool:

The package is the old bubble pack in a cardboard sleeve - that didn't last much past 1960. It's the earliest TD .020 package I know of, an early production engine. I have an Al carb body for it when the repair gives up.

Yours must be older than this one as it has the gold anodized crankcase. I have some of these. Sleeve says Cat No 160:698 Tee Dee .020

The PVC tubing dissolves the nipples on the tank. Have a new tank part to install.

I found these while looking for the camera mount for my 12mp airborne camera. I still find it hard to believe how small the 010s are.

I've always wanted to know what their timing is. Would it be too much to ask to have you measure that...?

Goodness knows what I'll ever do with the CO2 twin .020.. but it has a throttle.

At least it looks like you don't save any worn out junk........[unlike someone I know].

My problem is more likely that I don't wear stuff out fast enough by using it, then combine that with packrat tendencies. Even if you add the 30 or so .049s of various ilk, my collection still probably pales in comparison to many others. It's easy to accumulate a lot of ---- in 40 years of puttering around.

You amassed some of that when the Canadian dollar lagged the US dollar too..?

Yeah it was heavily swung the other way some years ago, then we had a brief flurry of advantage recently, a few months back. When it swung heavily back towards the US dollar and we got to about 14% exchange rate, I took the sage advice of a banker and others and converted my meagre US savings to Canadian about 2 months ago, on the advice that the rates wouldn't stay that high for long. They were right - the exchange went almost ten points better afterwards. Whenever I follow advice rather than follow my instincts.. $%#@^

Now that the exchange rate pendulum has momentum, it seems like fickle business to time it for the short term.
I don't have the stomach for that.
Owning a little bit of metal seems like a better idea. Tuck it away and forget about it.
It has intrinsic, enduring value when you might need it most.

MJD. That picture #2 might have enough value to buy a small car! All those 010 that others have the same fetish for. I don't have many with packaging intact. Usually mounted the motors or got them lightly used and not even a manual.
