Micro Shark from glasscraft
I finally got one of these little planes. It calls for a TD .010 should I go that route or will a .020 be faster? For the .010 I could run a 2x4 prop at about 26,000 or a .020 with a 2.5x5 prop around 20,000. Thoughts on what will make it move?

are you sure that is an APC prop? 3.75x3?

In the description I have (2.5x3E cut down from E-flite 3.75x3)
The Nano is best viewed with a 32in monitor = ) If you have enhanced frame control you can get some good snap shot views as it zips by. I use slow mo in my video software to pull out still shots to post from time to time. There are no APC props worth using for the TD .020 perhaps with there line of drone props coming out they will explore smaller sizes soon. |

Top end speed is only limited by prop selection once the plane is complete so you mod new ones till you found the top end. The props that tend to be the keeper for my general flying are the one that gives good thrust and speed after I am happy with finding the max possible speed which is the initial goal. These are the fastest Cox powered RC planes documented on You tube. The .049 has a new prop yet to be tested based on previous results 118 mph it will bust 130 with ease. The .020 will take the Nano 1 to 150+ it has hit 130.4 (4P) with the .010 The .010 will take the Nano 2 odds are good for 140+ mph, it has hit 123 with a 3P prop the 4P is next. |

What are the specs on the Glasscraft and how did you find one?
To really haul arse with a TD.010 you need to be in the 2 - 3.5oz RTF range The NANO 1 (3oz) has a 18in span the N2 has 16in span 2.2oz. I imagine the TD .020 will be the better choice if you want top end speed. The battery can be placed to get the TD .020 in check CG wise. If you can squeeze in a throttle sleeve and 3rd servo as having control of the speed will for sure make the maiden flight more viable for survival should the trims and throws be a handful. The TD .010 can keep the weight off the frame and make landings less harmful over time if the Sq. In. is less than 40 the N2 is 36 and is just fine if landing into any breeze but down wind the low weight has the elevator working hard to scrub off speed. The N1 is a perfect no fuss plane with a TD .010 with the TD .020 It will be a bit more of a handful with so much power. Every now and then I try to figure out how to buy a JM kit.. but never did find out how and where to do so. Do they still make new or was this a "find"?

The creator is still alive and kicking but getting one made is the big question.
I think he has retired in all regards. I would be happy just to snag the glass fuselages and fab the rest. Thank goodness for thin ply it's a easy way to make a lean, low weigh,t tough machine with thin walls to keep as much room inside as possible. |
if anyone was good with molds one could carve one up pretty easily and make one. The wing looks to be thicker than I would like on it maybe 10% or so but I haven't measured it. It has a wood built up wing and horizontal

I have bought two sizes of carbon sock to stretch over foam plugs then use gasoline to melt out
the foam. I have seen this done with hand toss gliders back in the 90's my friend from LA was making them all the time with fiberglass. What is the dry weight of the existing craft as it sits? Can you take a nice up close side view and top view pic, post the length and max width at the wing saddle one could duplicate a reasonable facsimile. :p |

That is small alright looks like a TD .010 would be the easy choice for fit.
I wonder if anyone has tried the TD .020. A Pee Wee is a bit heavy due to the back plate run time is sub 2 mins needle settings vary, with a stock prop 19.8 to 20.5k static has been reached. I have managed 25k ish with lower weight smaller dia. 3P props good numbers for a reed valve engine. 3.7 x 3E |
I saw a pic once of one of the tiny JM models with a VA .049. C/mon, maybe you can fit an .061 in there..
On the TD .020, Skipper's done way more than I have, but early in the game I cut a Driskill 5x2.75 1/2A combat prop down to 3.75" and messed with the tips. The performance gain over the stock prop was impressive. |

I can't say that the .020 will be faster because they are both pretty quick and get blisteringly quick when you start changing the props. Out of the box, the .020 would be faster but to be dead honest John and I were well over 70mph (stock motor and prop are good for 35 or so) just playing with the props with the MicroShark. The hot .010 setup was the .020 prop cut down to 2-9/32" with the tips swept back and re airfoiled. It spins in the 32k range with this prop, stock prop turns 27,400. Most .010's are delivered with a loose ball socket, you'll want to keep up on this if revving this high. I strongly preferred flying mine with a sheeted foam RG-14 wing. No idea if John is still making kits anymore, I stopped flying with him over a year ago. He's a retired Vietnam vet and has made kits since the 1980's-at first it was a full time job in addition to his day job, then it was a part time thing when he became allergic to the resin he uses. For most of the time I have known him, he wasn't ever "out" of the kit business but had definitely slowed down-he definitely earned it. That man and his wife literally made thousands of kits, and I can tell you from experience, it isn't easy, and it's a lot like Work if you care about what your are putting in a box. You could try calling him, just keep in mind he's a retiree in his 70's so if he makes you a kit it won't be there in 3 days like you overnighted it from Hobby King. I plan to do the TD 10 and the little fuel tank that came with the kit. 5-6 min run time with it. I was looking for some small wings already made up for it. Doesnt have to be scale for me lol
