spinner for tee dee .049
I have just gotten back into r/c after about a 25 year absence.
I pulled an old motor glider out of the basement and put in a radio. It already had a tee dee .049 in it. It flew great! But, the engine is hard to start. Not because of age or wear, but the usual problems that you have when you hand crank a cox engine. And, oh, when it kicks your finger, man does it sting! I have an electric starter for the bigger engines which requires a spinner. I was just wondering if someone makes a plastic spinner that can be put on the tee dee .049, so that I can use an electric starter? By the way, I noticed a fitting molded into the crankcase of the engine, is this for tank pressure? do I drill a hole? Is this worthwhile? Rich |
Spinner for T.D
Dubro makes a nice metal one in several colors for the TD and Norvel.
The best ones were made by ACE in 1.2 and 1.5 in white nylon. If you can find any in an older shop grab them as they were light and really worked nice. another item is the old C*x rubber spinner that they used on some of their ARF's look around for then . The market is really ready for some nice small spinners again. Oh don't drill that hole in the TD that was for timed pressure, it will really make you needle valve incredabily sensitive and you will need a pressurized tank system to run the motor. If you want to presurize the thing use a pressurized backplate. :) |
Check E-bay or Tower for a 1/2A starter
There are quiet a few companies making 1/2A starters these days. Since I made my own using a 500 sized electric motor I'm not shopping for one right now, but if you surf the net I'm sure you'll find one. Sorry I don't have more specifics for you. Good luck and welcome back !

This may sound silly, but I just flip the rubber part of the starter around, mine has a little hole on the other side just right for the little 1/2a metal spinners. Otherwise you could throw a starter spring form a babee .049.

Thanks SRA,
I'll see if my starter has a hole on the reverse side Rich |
spinner for TD .049
I've found the Carl Goldberg 1.5" spinner fits the Cox engines very nicely.

SRA was RIGHT!
I flipped over the rubber spinner insert on my electric starter and there was a small hole on the other side just like SRA said in his post. I reversed the insert and the .049 started within a second.
Never again will I have to bruise a knuckle or try to start this engine by hand for ten minutes. With the electric starter the engine practically starts just by getting near the thing! Thanks again guys. We have to get out the word about using an electric starter on the Cox engines for those who have never experienced it, they will never hand start it again. Rich |

I use a Ford truck, upper shock bushing in my Sullivan starter, it has a small enough hole to work on the small, metal spinners.
