WHat 1/2A Aerobatic plane?
 

Hi all,

Can i just ask, what aerobatic planes are out there that would work with a os 10LA?
It needs to be a ARF - NOT a kit
Are there any electric planes out there that i could convert into a glow?

There has been much discussion about converting E-flite Mini Funtanas around here - try searching Mini Funtana. Actually, look about three pages or so back and you might just spot it. Dunno about .10's , but .15's and even a .25 has been done. Just one idea, although a .10 would be about the lower limit. It is very light however.

I agee that a .10 would be at the lower range of power for the Mini Funtana.

I got hung up on the Mini Super Sportster. Thin semi symetrical wing, with a decent amount of wing area, (about 275sq in) & lite weight (my Enya .09-IV powered version weighs 19+ OZs, without landing gear) make this a great all-around sport flyer. Great "floater", stunter, & (if your .09 can turn a MAS 7x4 in the mid/hi 15k range, or a 7x5 in the lo 15k range,) a neat little hot rod. I've "gone through" (nice way of saying "DESTROYED") a couple of these, & presently have 3 of them. The .09 Enya powered unit, another one powered by an El Cheapo 2409-12 outrunner, & a 3rd unit modified into a profile with a .074 norvel. Just learned how to get the Norvel into it's h.p. range pulling a 6x4 prop, & this thing howls! The next one will probably have a .11 cx for power, but I'm sure that the wing will have to be strengthened for the expected additional forces. .... OK, I'll pull myself away from the MSS sales talk, & admit that I'm really tempted by several of the ULTRAFLY planes, lite weight, & lotsa wing! Gonna have to wait till next summer though. In the middle of a move, & no new home picked out yet. .................... George K.

Yeah, I picked mine up last night and imagined a .10 in it and thought it would be pretty tame with that little power, so somewhat retract my suggestion about it. Might be "pleasant" but not a powerhouse, and that airframe calls for pulling power.

I have one but power it with an OS .15 CV-A a .10 will fly it but with far less authority. Depends on how you fly, engine or wing. Down side with my engine is w/ the 2 oz tank I get 4-5 min flight time... a .10 would get you about 6-8 min I would guess.

one question - would a .18 sized boat engine work in a plane? If i changed the head to an normal aircraft head?
Would the engine spin fast enough?
As i have 2 of these unused.

I'm sure that many people would be happy with a .10 in the Mini Funtana for floating around, but it just doesn't strike me as being enough power for the type of flying for which the Funtana was designed.

I don't believe the .10 would even hover the mini Funtana let alone torque roll.

Sometimes boat/car engines don't do so well in planes. From what I understand, they're timed a little differently. An engine swinging an aircraft prop has different power requirements than boats or cars.

It would be nice if someone with direct knowledge of the .18 could chime in here, but I think in general you are quite correct; I would expect the marine engine to be timed for high peak power at high rpm, and I would not expect the tractability that you would want for an aircraft like the Funtana. The Funtana calls for good throttling all through the mid range and the ability to turn an 8-3 or 8-4 prop or thereabouts happily.

The following comment could be construed as heresy on this forum and I may be tarred and feathered for the next sentence, but let me say I am a fuel junkie and only dabble in electrics. But, that said, I'd like to see a glow version of the Funtana outperform my lekkie.. it is light, has unlimited vertical, and flies 8-10 minutes on a charge with all sorts of hijinks during the flight. And it has linear throttle response from "stop" to full bore, which of course is a given with those. And din;t need any reinforcement.

It is also true that my Funtana was the catalyst to invest in some 2100mAh LiPo's and a better charger, and holy crappin' crocodiles are those bloody things expensive! Talk about yer up front costs.. [X(]

I totally understand the appeal of a conversion so let me not discourage that whatsoever...

I'm lookin at the PA Katana Mini, any good for a glow conversion? I wont mind paying for a new glow engine for it. But i certainly wont spend any money on a lecci setup!

The recommended weight would be good with a .25 2-stroke or a .30 4-stroke. The plane in the picture attached is a little smaller and weighed 40oz and a .25 was able to pull it vertical out of sight.

PA Katana mini and Norvel .15 come to mind. I have not looked into it but if I were gonna start a project like this that is where I would start looking.

It's a plane of my own design, called an Extra Edge. I built a .25 size and a 1/2A size.

but the thing is i really dont have enuff time to do a scratch build. thats why i stated at the top of a ARF.

JL, serious question here, when you say you don't have enough time do you mean the plane has to be ready by some deadline, like for a contest or Fun Fly? Or, do you mean you literally don't have a spare hour here and there when you can put a kit together?

I'm afraid you're missing out on half the hobby and one of its most rewarding aspects by limiting yourself to arfs. I have found that when the average "busy" individual adds up all the time they spend surfing the web, watching tv, shopping, talking on the phone, etc., that they actually have all the time needed to build a model. I currently build in a 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 ft. space on a card table; an hour here, an hour there. This thread was started four days ago. I think you'd be surprised what you could get done over that amount of time.

i dnt have enuff time any more as skool starts again 2moro. easter holidays are over so i will be in skool, which means i wont have enuff time off to build a kit - dnt 4get i get several pieces h/w aswell.[:'(] so that will automatically take up nearly a whole day. thats y i'm limitin myself to a ARF.

The reason I first posted about the Extra Edge is to show that a model that is similar in size and weight to the PA Katana Mini was well powered with a .25 2 stroke.
