Dave, nice work but if I don't get the Curvette I will feel a huge empty spot...

You might want to check the link for number eight. Title does not match.

Anyone out there know of a quick and true way of sanding an airfoil shape into a 1/4" solid balsa sheet wing?
I'm looking at building the Laumer Dub-l-dek-er and that's how the wings are done.

thanks, chuck
Pretty much the same way I carve and sand my chuckie wings....

Wasn't it Michealangelo who was quoted as saying, "sculpture is easier than painting. All you do is remove anything that doesn't look like David". I might be confusing Mike with Leonardo (its been so long since I spoke with them) but you get the idea. Just remove anything that doesn't look like an airfoil. Glad I could help.

Oh all right, I'll tell you the secret to Sheetface's precision airfoil. One thing that helps me is to shine a bright light at a sharp angle to look for little shadows. I use one of those cheap clamp lamps and move it around every so often. Just hook it up and move it around slowly and you'll see how it works. The main thing is the SHARP plane blade. The razor blade variety never worked for me so I'd look for one with a regular blade like the big boys if you have a choice.

Thanks Robert, Click on item #8 (the SECOND Zoomerang) and you get the V-Girl!
Cut and paste......oops.

Hi Dave nice collection you have started. I was looking in my collection of Model Airplane News but can't find none of the plans from Keith. I am guessing he was doing them earlier in the 1950"s. My collection of magazines starts in 1979. There are some nice plans in some of my magazines though. I find the coolest ones are some called (The Golden Oldies) dated back to the 1940'ies Man I wish you guys could put them up in a tiled PDF so I could print them to an 8x11 printer paper and tape together. I don't have the the version of acrobat to change them to tiled formatt. [&o] I was kind of lucky to get this collection of Magazines. I walked into Carltons one day and they were on the counter. The owner said there free take a couple so I did then when he said he just wanted them out of there. I said Ill take them all if you don't mind. He said there mine so I have them from 1979 to about 1984 a few missing here and there that Im sure other people grabbed before I found them. Dave

OK, the Curvette is in there, a better version of the V-Girl (Gene Rock), the Lulla Bi and the Flea Whiz (Bruce).
Get building boys. I want pictures of flying planes in 1 month! :D

I'm in for at least one but I can't start on it until I'm back from a motorcycle trip that'll be over mid way through September. I've been wanting to clear the board for a while and do something of this sort for a couple of cutesy parkflyer electrics.

Dave,

Since I started this thread I guess I should be the first one to start: The only problem is, is that when I finally start to settle on one, you post three more! How many did you say Keith designed? Tell you what, give me a suggestion and I'll go with it, because I can't decide!

By the way, did the Krackerjac plans come across ok?

Chuck,
Yup, got the Krackerjack, I'm going to "wholesale" my main page
with all new stuff (edit!) sooner or later, I can put it in there with the other stuff I have
received as well.
We have managed to collect all of Kieth's fun little gas free-flights I think.
A few things he published in Aero and a couple scale CL planes are missing.
I vote for the Curvette, I'll bet one of those has not flown in a quarter century.

I knew you'd say that! Do you happen to have the consrutction article on that one? Anyway I printed out the parts patterns this morning and I will start cutting tomorrow. Right now I'm at work in the middle of grape harvest. 12hr days, but have tomorrow off.

Now the next question is, what are you going to build??

I know that I'm usually all talk (or would that by type :D) but I"m going to try to do two Laumers. First on the list is the Dan'L Boom and then it's Buttons. These two are my most loved of the lot from his book. The pics of these still haunt me so it's time to do something about it.

The Vgirl is a close third though.

RE: Keith Laumer

Thanks, Chuck. As if I needed another project. Took one look at your original V-Girl link and was sold. I printed up the plan from Dave's site and after a visit to the LHS this afternoon, I am ready to start wasting balsa. The Curvette, 'Boom, Lulla-Bi, and Swanky Doodle were all close runners up. Always dreamed of flying a Lizzie too, and LHS swears that they can still get the kit. Ordered it up, but meanwhile it's on to the V-Girl.

Injunnut1 asked if rudder-vators would be the hot ticket for control. Some at the LHS have suggested that a installing a small controlable rudder under the V at the back of the dorsal. OK under power, but perhaps not so good gliding. Just use the mixer and be done with it? Any suggestions?

Power was hoped to be a PAW Diesel .049, but the current owner suddenly got a case of collectablitis[:'(]. Cox reedies are too common. I wanted good throttling and quiet running, so I settled on a Thunder Tiger .07. Yeah, probably an ounce or so too heavy, but it is a good fit all around. No, I don't have to run it at full throttle. It might be prudent to do a little beefing up in the center wing area, however. Yes, I'll keep the weight increase to a minimum. Thought about sheeting the fuse too, but who needs the extra weight and covering up that beautiful structure would just be wrong. The tail should be fine. Radio access will be through a hatch in the bottom, position to be determined once I figure out how it balances with the .07 at the pointy end.

Well, time to start cutting. Any suggestions or comments are more than welcome. Say, what are you guys building?

RE: Keith Laumer

Reid,

If you read a few posts back, I started the V-Girl only to destroy it before it got off the building board. My wife says it looks cute and I should give it another try and Fritzke says I should build the Curvette. I couldn't decide. After looking over the Curvette, I'm ashamed to say I quite get how Keith's shaping the back of the fuse, looking over the side and top views. And at this point I want to build something fast but not too simple. So I'm dropping all suggestions and am going to build the Swanky Doodle. I have a brand new "guttless" Ok Cub that should be just right for it.

By the way, theres a few more Laumer designs out there that haven't been sent to Dave yet. I'm sure someone out there has them to sent to Dave, don't they??

By the way, does anyone have the construction article for the Curvette? I already asked Dave, but he dosent have it.

Chuck

I sent Bipeflyer a couple of old magazines (Young Boy's and Hobbies or something like that) that had a couple Laumer design's in them one of which was the Curevette. If you ask real nice he would probably share a copy of the article.

In fact I haven't seen Andrew speak up in this thread (unless I missed it), he is a big Laumer fan and built a real nice Zoomerang and had a build thread on here earlier this year.

I kind of like the The Dub-L Dek-R and I have a PAW 80 that would be a nice fit although the 55 would be nicer.

RE: Keith Laumer

Graham,

I too like the Dub-l-Dek-R, but I don't care for the thin airfoil section and solid balsa wing. When I build it, I was thinking about a thicker airfoil section and a sheeted balsa wing, full sheet on top and quarter on the bottom, similar to the Dakota bipe. I'm looking for a little slower plane with a bit more lift. It would be fun to build both wings and compare. Speaking of bipe's, I think I recently ran across someone who is producing kits for the Lulla-Bi. Just don't remember where I saw it.

I'll bet Gene Rock has it! He is a real Roy Clough historian. I think he has
a collection of his material 3 feet deep. Roy was a mad genius.

BMatthews,
Don't let Dave snooker you, he just sent the Tennie Gennie to me. I didn't have it. It's true that I have a decent collection of Roy Clough's designs but the collection I do have concentrates on his early years when he was into free flight helicopters. Sure wish that this forum would allow the posting of PDF files so that I could share some of my collections.

The ping pong ball pilot is a certain clue. I have a vague recollection that a lot of Roy's design's had pilots of similar pedigree.

I have the article for this one in one of my piles of old magazines - will be a good excuse to go looking. There might even be other design by Roy if anyone is interested. I will have to set aside a couple of hours this evening for some relaxing reading.

cheers, Graham

Interesting you should mention the Dub-l-Dek-R and the Dakota in the same breath. When I first say the Dub-l-Dek-R the Dakota popped into my head! Very similar but also quite different. I never thought of modifying the wing of the Dub-l-Dek-R but that certainly has possibilities. A silkspan or Polyspan covered built up wing wouldn't be out of place and probably worth trying.

Graham,

It's time for me to slide the Dub-l-Dek-R plan into AutoCAD and start tracing the wing. The more I think about it, the more I want a built up wing for this. I'm going to go the Dakota route.

As for Gene's comment about no PDF files, I agree. Theres allot that can be "shared" if these were allowed.

And as if I don't have enough projects, a kind gentelman from a town near by, graciously sold me his brand new Sterling Hornet kit. I had recieved some parts scans and a set of plans from some generous people, but now I have the whole kit. When I get time, I intend to trace & scan all parts an do a CAD drawing of this cool little bi-wing, which I will happly share. I was telling Dave about it last night, but he'd never seen one. So here it is
