5-40 Small Pattern Hex Nuts

1 Attachment(s)
Okay all you Cox people. Here's a test. Have any of you seen in your screw hunts for 5-40 screws anyone who carries SMALL PATTERN 5-40 HEX NUTS?

Standard ones take a 1/4" wrench and the small pattern takes a 3/16" wrench. I need the small ones.

I've looked in all the standard corners for them. Only thing I can find is military or aircraft suppliers in high quantities. I only need a dozen or so for my Cox powered 1/8" boat prop shafts. Regular pattern 5-40 nuts stand out behind the prop like a door knob.

If anyone replies that knows where I can pick a few up, I'll be shocked...

I do not know myself but you might consider a file or Dremel with a grinding wheel.

My stock of 5/40 hex nuts is 5/16th, but there does look like there's a chance that one could be ground or filed down to 3/16th with patience. Don't know how it would balance out, though.

You might save yourself a lot of wasted time and frustration if you simply purchased a 5-40 tap and some 3/16" brass hex and got on with it. Drill and tap as deep as you can get with the tap then get someone with a lathe to part off sections to whatever nut thickness you deem appropriate for the job.

Probaby on the right path with that thought.

Octura makes a 5-40 streamlined prop tail nut that is made of brass hex, but then again...too big.

To copy it with 3/16" stock might not be a bad way to go even though it is an "out of the way" type project.
