There was someone for awhile that made a silcone rubber muffler that was surprisingly quiet. Not the normal metal idea but who is to say that metal is the best material for this?

You are correct. I have one around somewhere. You stretch the thing over the head and down onto the exhaust. Darned if I can remember who made it. Mine is gray silicone, relatively thin walled.
