I always thought thatP-47's went with the Orange/Yellow tail around May 1945.
Lt. Harold G. Stalnaker, who was downed on December 23 1944, flew an `Orange tail`P-47D Razorback. He was in fact downed by another P-47, and it has been speculated that his aircraft was misidentified precisely due to the orange-painted tail. Also, "Tarheel Hal" was damaged beyond repair in a combat mission prior to May 1945. (The one flying now with the Lone Star Museum is one brought home from South America and painted in that scheme).
