I do sympathise with what you tried to do and why you tried to do it. But it sounds to me like what that kid needs most is a good role model, not a radio-controlled model.
His dad sure sounds like a douche, no doubt about it, but by hitting him you didn't give that kid what he really needs - a positive role model.
Children need guidance and positive influences so much more than they need charity. Don't give up on folks because of one douche - but also be prepared to learn something from this experience yourself (we never stop learning), and think about how you can best influence those around you in future.
