Or could I possibly build a small simple balsa trainer for under $80 for all including electronics except for radio? I think i might be capable of this.
You're not going to be able toput togethera trainer for less than $80. You can buy a trainerARF from Tower Hobbies for about $80, but that doesn't include your engine or radio.

They do sell a combo that includes the plane, radio, and engine for $279 but that is currently unavailable on thier website.
