Default 2.4ghz systems: What's interchangeable?

I searched through the forums and found some old threads from '08 and '09 that touched on the subject but they didn't fully answer my quandry.

From today's major radio manufactuers: Futaba, Airtronics, Spektrum, they all build 2.4ghz systems with different technologies such as FASST or FHSS or DSM or DSM2 and 3, etc. I've been trying to piece the facts together but I'm still cloudy on what the different technologies do for the user and if different brands can be "cross-bound."

For example: my Flux has a Spektrum DX3.0 system installed in it (a nice little package by the way) but, I would like to use Futaba equipment down the road. So, will my Spektrum receiver bind with a Futaba 2.4 Tx? Most resources suggest no, however, Ibelieve I read somewhere that a particular Spektrum receiver or module / receiver combination is compatible with Futaba Tx's.

Is there a resource online somewhere that spells it all out? Can someone shed some light on the matter? Please and THANKYOU!
