Default RE: $100 Servos Help!!!!

I've been flying ducted fan jets since the mid 70's. Back then, the strongest servos were 72 oz of torque. The jets flew at speeds of 180 to 200 mph. Most of my servos were 48 oz of torque and that was for elevators and ailerons. We never had a problem with those servos.

Now, companies are selling 215+ torque servos and charging $100+ for them. A 215+ torque servo is OVERKILL x 2. In my opinion (and from my experience) there is no need to have that kind of torque on any plane ... well, maybe a full size plane.

If you want to save money, still buy the name brand servos, but stick to torque less than 90 oz. I doubt you need more torque than that. If you want to feel a little safer, then buy servos with metal gears, but you don't need more than 72~90 oz of torque.

As for me, I use Futaba 3010 servos (nylon gears) in all my planes (including a P-47 with a 50cc gas engine) and jets.
