Replacing CA hinges
This is an ideal opportunity to replace the hinges with something better.
On my planes, I use kevlar thread in a figure-8 pattern at 3 locations for a rudder, say.
I drill 4 1/16" diameter holes about 3/32" apart.
After stiffening one end of about a foot of thread with glue and a fat knot at the other end, it's passed thru the vertical. Then thru the slot between the vertical and rudder, and thru the rudder. Back thru the slot, and into the vertical, generally in the same hole it started with.. then back thru the slot and another hole in the rudder, so there's maybe 6 to 8 "8"s".
A little glue on the ends..snipped when dry.
The holes can go thru the surfaces where the old CA strips are already
installed.
This is very handy when the hinge at the bottom of a rudder gives up the ghost, while the other hinges are still OK.
