This is Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's AVG #21 where on Dec 20, 1941, 13 days after Pearl Harbor the first combat action for the AVG occurred over southern Yunnan Province when a combination of the First and Second Sqns shot down 9 of 10 Japanese bombers with a loss of one AVG aircraft. The press will later report they fought like Flying Tigers.
