The only way it would fit in the tray is to run it on its' side. Is there any harm to the battery or to the car to run the battery on its' side?
No , there is no problem whatsoever with running a LIPO in any orientation that it'll fit into your model . The only batteries that are "direction specific" are lead acid batteries of the type found in your car , those do have an "up" side and cannot be run on their side (or upside down) . Where there is no liquid (only a paste) and no airspace at the top of the cells like a "wet cell" , a LIPO is truly a "directionless" battery . That's why their so good in model airplanes , can you imagine the trouble with a model plane whose battery couldn't be on it's side or upside down during aerobatic flight ?
