When I but join two pieces of wood together and want a very smooth joint, I but the two pieces together tight and use blue masking tape along the joint. Use the tape like a hinge to fold the ends apart and apply glue. Lay the parts flat, tape on bottom. Clean up the glue the squooshed out and apply another strip of tape on this side. Wait till dry, remove tape and your joint will be as smooth as a babies butt. Then put a doubler over the joint, !/8" maybe even 1/4" lite plywood, at least..
