I'd just cut a piece of 1/8" plywood to fit on the backside of the former and glue it on then drill the needed hole. Make it about 1.5" long for gluing surface and it will be just as strong as the former would have been were it not cut through. Hardly seems worth stalling on a project for when it's a 3 minute fix.
