My first Model A Ferd that I got in 1965 came from an old German dude who owned it thru WW2 in fact he was the original owner.
He had a two gallon can hanging under the hood from the radiator support rods. That was his "wartime start can" The fuel on those old Ferds was gravity fed from a cowl tank, there was a shut off valve and mixture control in the cab on the passenger side.

During the war he had kerosene in the main tank and gasoline in the start tank. Main fuel off, he would start on gasoline and once warmed he would shut of the start tank and turn on the main tank to run on kerosene. The mixture easily tuned by the in dash mixture knob. The idle and spark timing easily set by two levers on the steering column.
