The wider the wood, the bigger the tree has to be. Makes sense 3" would be cheaper than 4". Yea 4" would be less strips but not worth the extra cost as balsa is getting more rare to buy and more expensive. Balsa is so easy to work with so why not get the cheaper option. There's something special when building with wood and it all comes together despite the challenges.
