John, come to find out, not sure it was the battery. More than likely it was the Prophet Plus charger I'm using. These were
recalled in Canada due the very same issue, because of incidents like mine here in the U.S. So don't ditch your batteries just yet.
I'm really wondering If I should rebuild, clean, and re-grease the gearbox.
