As a taxpayer, I subsidize the AMA's 501c3 status through their income tax exemption. I'd argue that's much more credible when it comes to criticism than some silly member number. Ditto for the club.
So why be a member at all. If there is no benefit to membership and all you want is to criticize, your taxes should be enough.
