Default Remote Glow System or not?

I have read many threads about mounting engines upside down and will they run ok. In many cases, the answers are "yes" it will run fine and you do not need a remote glow system. Let's say the engine works fine upside down. Here is my question: When do you use a remote glow on an engine that runs fine upside down? Isn't the answer really whether not you can get a glow starter on the plug or not? The reason I ask is because at our club, the planes are started on the ground. It would seem to me that getting a glow starter on the plug is only possible when the landing gear is high enough to get the ignitor on the glow plug. So without going to a remote glow starter is there any technique that is used when the plug is too close to the ground to get a glow starter on it?
