Default Dubro tank stopper--mine melted

Yep--did not think it could happen. Got some trash in the carb of my 3W 24 and cleaned it out. Went to find the sorce of the problem and all sorts of things were in the tank. I thought maybe had lost my mind and used the wrong type of stopper, until I went to buy another today and it is the same-(brown in color)
CONFESSION TIME: The plane has set up for about a year and a few ounces of gas was left in the tank. When I took the tank apart the brown stopper was melted and smelled sorta like varnish--this was the stuff in the tank.
I can't remember for sure but I may have used Sta-Bil in the gas when I mixed it. Could that have done it?
Any Ideas on what happened or has this happened to you?
