First, whoever it is you're getting this information from should be slapped upside the head.
Once you've done that, don't listen to anything else he says.

On to the 6EXA. By now you've already read that it should work with any Futaba compatible receiver on the market. The price you got, $90 is great, if it's for the entire package. However, if it's just the transmitter, it's not such a good deal. You can buy a complete 6EXA package (transmitter, receiver, 4 S3004 servos, charger, rx and tx nicads) for $130 at Tower right now. Even if you don't want the flight pack portion, you can sell it on eBay for way more than the $40 difference.
