Default Glassing a wood model

I've often wondered, why apply a complete covering of fiberglass to a wooden model? Is it done for additional strength, cosmetic reasons, or whatever? It has to add additional weight, but seems to be a routine step. I've done searches to determine the reason this step is done, but all have been unsuccessful. I know it probably sounds stupid to those of you who have been building for years, but it I am curious as to the reason for doing this. Thanks in advance. Sunny
