Sounds to me like you are setting up the gear to gear clearance too tight. Leave a little backlash between the gears. Also, when one gear fails, replace the gear it was mated to as it most likely has wear on the teeth not readily apparent to a naked eye. Insufficient gear clearance will burn up the gears in short order.
