Default Positive shift vs negative shift for servos.

Can Futaba servos be used with JR or Airtornics radios and vise versus? In other words, do the servos care what shift (pos. or neg.) the receiver operates on? I'm not asking about the connectors, which I know are slightly different, J vs. Z. With a file and an X-acto knife I can modify a J connector so it will fit a Z connector. I'm asking about the shift thing.
