Actually, filling with just one strip of wood would be what you wanted to do if you were using nylon hinges and planned to move their hinging out to line up with the hinging axis already established by the torque rod. If you round the resulting LE of the aileron, and use hinge locations that are online with the torque axis, you wind up with a very elegant result.

I've added a couple of hinges that would work and one that won't:
