While it's true that they don't "need" Balsarite, I can say from experience that they stay down way better if you use it. I use it in the engine area, fuel tank area, and on any places where the covering meets bare wood, such as around the wing saddle. Provides fuel proofing and helps avoid having fuel creep under the covering.
