Would having a cracked/broken exhaust gasket cause problems in the normal function of the car? I have a CEN Fun Factor Rally (4WD).

I stripped the car to clean it and put it back together, with a broken gasket, and when I ran it after reassembly - it was very sluggish.

Just curious since I realize that backpressure is kind of important in 2-stroke engines.
