Gordon, on my F-15, I have a thread on here somewhere, I did the process you are speaking of, I got the tape at the local PPG paint store, it was the same blue tape we use for masking off on paint, but really really thin. Worked most excellent.
I tried to find 3M blue fineline tape that was small enough, but couldn't find any.
