Just a thought but if you take 1/16 balse and laminate it with light weight glass cloth and tite bond or simular glue you can make the bends easyer
with the help of a little amonia or windex. I use Wally World in the spray $.99 per bottle. Then you can run the grain of the wood any direction
no cracks or spliting.
