35% Scale Electric Foam Extra 300LX!
[X(] Say what???? [X(]
Yup, you read it right... I've been secretly working on this design project for some time now, and it's time to open it up, start some test construction, and see what happens!
It's a 35% Extra 300L.
Span: 106"
Area: 2060 in2
Weight? Not sure on the final weight yet. I think it can be as light as 10# but I will be happy if it comes in under 15#
As shown in the picture the weight is only 6.8 oz!!! My design goal is a 28oz dry fuselage (with camopy, cowl, t deck, and covering.)

RE: 35% Scale Electric Foam Extra 300LX!
It's all laser cut... specifically for foam construction. This was cut the am, and it is just a dry run to test out the parts fit on everything. I used blue foam on this one since it won't see the air... Depron for the flight version.
The AXI 4130/20 will handle it easily, but will look funny with only a 18" prop. I have to run the #'s and see if any one makes it, but a 24x5-6 prop would be perfect on it.
(Motor costs only 169.00!!)
Plan on Nimh pack for this one, lipos could work, but it would be a spendy pack. needs to deliver 40 amps.
The other choice is a belt drive and a astroflight...

I'd like to see some finished pics too!!!
This is my winter project. I have managed to get all the radio gear for it, but still am undecided on the motor. The AXI I talked about above will put out enough thrust to hover, I just need to track down a prop that looks better than the 18" Popsicle stick on the front.
The wing is still in the CAD faze... it's all built up from 2, 3, and 6mm Depron. Custom CF joiner tube.
Landing gear is a big 3D Foamy Carbon gear. Still have to make the plugs for the CF cowl and wheel pants.
Lots to do... Just wanted to share the experience here on RCU as it progresses!
Please pass on your comments, knowledge and suggestions!

Not a problem.... 299.5
I always give away cheep stuff when I am testing something new, so if someone has an interest in TESTING (don't know how it's all gonna work ) with me... let me know. I'll get some laser parts to ya for my cost.

All i know is that i always wanted a 30%er but am gonna get one as soon as i get a job.
Levi, if you could put plans on your website or make this available as a laser cut kit, that'd just be awesome!! I can see my self coming to the field with this huge thing, lol.
Try to make available to website. I'd presonally get one.

Ya... its big... that's an 8' table its on, and the rudder sticks out another foot and a half, then the cowl on the front another foot...
I'll be getting the plans on the website when it is all done, and if it works out, I'll offer a kit of it too. Flights first....
Did someone say something about an axi on a gear box? I might have to go that rought, I havn't found a low pitch 24" prop out there.

RE: 35% Scale Electric Foam Extra 300LX!
Gonna find me a gasser and eat it up...
If I had smoke, then I'd have to go and put little speakers in it and make engine sounds....
I think it'll be way too cool to set the plane out on the taxi with the prop stopped, walk back, jam the throttle and pop into a hover....
I am impressed with the strength so far. I was a bit conserned about the foam flexing. It still has no stringers, and is way stronger than I could have hoped for!

RE: 35% Scale Electric Foam Extra 300LX!
3D_Foamy that looks great. I've been drawing up an Extra 260 35% using Auto Cad. It'll be all foam and CF. For the stringers I'm going to use 6mm foam with CF on both sides. I did a little test and the stingers came out stronger than spruce the same size and lighter. Did a little vacuum bagging then cut the stingers in strips. I'm thinking about using this system for wing spars for my foamies since CF tubing is getting harder to find when you need it.
I've done a lot figuring using Auto Cad as to the sq. area of everything in building the plane and the best I think I'm going to be able to do is 17 pounds. That's 8 pounds of batteries alone using 9000mah Ni-Mh batteries, plus I'll be lucky if I get 7 minute flights! Cant find any Lipoly batteries that can handle the draw. The motor I'm going to use is a Torcman TM685-40 which will turn a 26" prop direct drive and up to 36" with their gear drive, but will be pulling around 90+ amps. It weighs around 3 pounds. So that leaves only 6 pounds for everything else! It's going to be a challenge!
For the motor info you can find it here http://www.torcman.de/index_e.
As for the AXI motor I don't think you'll be happy with it, even with a gear drive. It might fly it, but no 3D it would be like putting a 90 size engine on a 35% plane and hoping to hover with it.

RE: 35% Scale Electric Foam Extra 300LX!
I am imbedding .125 carbon tube in the edges of the fuselage sides and doing away with the stringers... I was super happy with the strength.
I am leaning towards the Hacker B50-11XL calcs say 15-19 lbs of thrust on the 6.7:1 GBX.
Gotta admit though... this thing is big foe e power... my commen sense side tells me to drop it down to 30%....
