RE: Hl yak 55
Nice flames guys, did you use stencils? Threw mine in the air this morning and had a blast untill my TX batt got too low and started beeping at me to shut it down, had to cut the flight short. I am keeping mine in my trunk so I can fly any where any time. There is a field behind the office and I can fly durring breaks when the wind cooperates. I was getting in some KE's when I had to land, I really hadnt done too manny before but it KE's pretty good, I was surprised.

I used masks (stencils) that I downloaded and printed out. Lay one side on the foam and paint, then lay the other side of that and paint the other color.

RE: Hl yak 55
I traced the print outs to a poster, the paper is thicker and easier to handle.
I got my Yak 90% done last night. I put on that Eskay 400 motor, ESC, and Rx. That motor beeps real loud when you power it up. I thought it was the ESC, but I really think it's the motor. Weird, huh? Anybody else using the motor heard it beep???
I'm running a BP-10A brushless ESC from Balsa Products. That sucker gets a little warm when you run up the motor a couple times....I hope that's normal. []

Yup, its the motor beeping, not the ESC. The ESC sends just a little power to the motor and it makes the coils "sing". Some of the ESC's can even get the motor to play a song. You can also make the motor "sing" by just giving it a tad bit of throttle, It will kinda squeal until the prop starts moving. Dont do it too long though, as it builds up some heat.
Dont worry to much about the BP-10 getting warm. It probably just got warm from running "test stand" style. It will keep cool when you fly it. On your first flight, go fly around a tad and then check it. It should be cool to lukewarm. Dont let it get over 130 degrees though, it will demagnitize the motor and it wont run worth a flip afterwards. This applies not just to the BP10, but to all brushless motors.

Been flying mine all morning and having a blast. Been working on rolling circles on low rates and also flying low and slow using the rudder alot for flat turns. This is a great little plane, I need to get some of the slop out of the linkages though.

Way to go Big Barry!!![sm=thumbup.gif] All I have left on mine is the control rods...still. I haven't worked on it any yet because the winds wouldn't allow me to fly it even if it were done. That's OK, cause Tuesday and Wednesday are looking good. This will be the first days in 2 weeks that the winds haven't hit 15mph at all!!![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

I decided to join the club too..... $20 bucks? that works out to almost be cheaper than the Fan fold planes I normally build!!!
I will overpower mine with my Hacker A20 and TP 1320 3S1P pack.... but it should be nice!
Yes, the directions do look a bit confusing with the carbon piece.... there are pictures AFTER the carbon should be installed with the wing in two pieces!
Did anyone think the elevator was a bit too flexible? I'm sure it will be fine once it is hinged but curious if it is a bit too flexible?
also has anyone added any carbon to stiffen to fuse or is it enough? I have mine but haven't started putting it together yet....

RE: Hl yak 55
I was cutting grass and washing cars this windy afternoon and all of a sudden the wind died! [X(] HURRY.....get those control rods hooked up!!! A little heat shrink tubing and a few drops of CA and a quick programming of the model memory in my radio and off I went to the field beside the house for a maiden.
I hand launched directly into a hover at about 15'....started lowering it down little by little until I was about head level. Then I thought I would see if the wings worked. Yup, it flies like a normal plane if you want to. A little knife edge passes and a few tight snaps...really cool, no coupling in knife edge either! Oh well...back to some hovering!!! I brought it down and touched the tail in the high grass in the field but didn't BUMP. [sm=RAINFRO.gif] This thing doesn't torque around very bad either. I didn't have to keep holding in right stick to hover.
For some reason my flight only lasted about 5 minutes??? I came in and checked the programming guide (what a joke) of the BP-10A but didn't find anything to help. I put the pack on the charger and flew my Cub around for about 20 minutes. After that I flew for another 5 minutes until it started cutting out. [] Oh well....maybe my pack wasn't all the way charged?

RE: Hl yak 55
I have been battling winds myself but this plane if kept at above 10' is a pretty good flyer up to about 10mph. The problem I have is flying too low with a gusty breeze, it causes a type of wind shear and the plane bounces up and down a couple of feet at a time. I used to not fly if there were any wind now I just fly higher and try to keep it heading into the wind for some fun hovering aerobatics. Try knife edge flight with no forward movement, pretty cool!

RE: Hl yak 55
I got some good flying with the Yak yesterday evening! Instead of hovering the whole time I decided to try some other stuff. Knife edge is really cool with this plane. It will K.E. loop pretty good. It doesn't couple any, it just tracks VERY gently left or right. I have to have it on low throws to do a nice one. Flat spins are really good with it. I figured out how to do those tight snaps that everybody does in the ETOC videos. Something really cool with it is to get up really high and put it on about 25% throttle, straight and level flight, full throws on, and give it full left (or right) aileron only and watch it roll. With those "barn door" ailerons out, it will spiral quite fast!
I brought it to work with me today and I'm gonna weigh it in a second. Then go fly around lunch time.

Just got back from running a couple batteries out of this thing. Let me just say....tail taps in the weeds and on a utility box are waaay cool!!!! [8D] A few times when I "dipped" down into the weeds I got my elevator caught and it drug me down. No harm done, I just about fell out laughing though. [sm=lol.gif]
I did repeated knife edge loops with about a 10-15' radius. Rolling harriers are the bomb! As long as you keep it flying slow full throws are the best. If it speeds up it's kinda hard to keep up with.[&:]

RE: Hl yak 55
I'll add my impression. I bought a HL Yak and the Esskay 400XT motor about a week ago. I have to admit, the first thing that caught my eye was the great price on both the airframe and the outrunner motor. I've only been flying RC for 4 months and I'm an old guy (51). I learned on a slow stick and then went to a 3DFoamy Citabria. I have to say, this is a much more touchy airplane than the 48" wing span Citabria. I set up my dual rates with the high rate at full throw (60% exponential) and the lower rate at around 55% along with 40% exponential. I lasted about 1 minute. The airplane is not really strong, the fuselage broke in half at the back of the wing. Good news was it didn't take very long to fix it using odorless CA and water/baking soda kicker. Went back and made the following changes: moved battery forward, reduced the low rate on the ailerons and increased the low rate on the elevator . Increased exponential to 60/70%.
Flew great! This is a very nice airplane. I love the way it rolls. Even on low rate, the roll rate is pretty high. Use high rates, the roll rate is fantastic. The airplane definitely goes where you point it. You can also do really nice large loops that are very smooth. It's really a lot of fun to fly. I built it pretty heavy and it still goes vertical with 3 cell 1100 mah LIPOs.
Thanks,
Glenn

Saturday evening. No wind. Started out with some major carnage, but CA and kicker came through again. The "pop out" style control horns saved the day! 5 minutes later I was back in the air.
