Both are very similar, but I would go with AirfoilZ because of their excellent customer service. The planes are similar in flying characteristics, but AirfoilZ has more strength reinforcements in their planes, where the Copperhead simply relies on it's plastic outer skin with some internal support.

Also, AirfoilZ is coming out with full fuse s now, so if you are into that I would stick around and wait for their arrival. Their Extra 260 is out of prototype stage and will be on the market soon, it will run about 70-80 dollars.

HMM, The two planes have distinctly different flying characteristics. And it seems that both are undergoing refinements. Check out the what ever happened to copperhead stiffys thread and see what we did. Sorry I can't provide a link.

Whatever choice you make, I'm sure you'll be happy....

Cheers,

I can't speak personally to the "Copperhead Stiffy". I will say that they seem to be a very nice airframe & I will never offer any type of negative feedback on a product that I don't own therefore I would be offering uninformed information.

The Airfoil Z is another story. This I can speak intelligantly about as I do own both their Yak, & The Edge 540 courtesy of their monthly give away. I don't know if they are still doing that promotion or not but earlier last year Paul sent me an e-mail informing me that I was the proud new owner of their latest plane at that time, the new Edge540 Z. Shot it right out to me without even as much as asking me for the cost of the shipping! Both are the finest foamies I have owned & flown to date. When they claim in their advertising that these foamies fly & perform like a big airframe even in extremely high winds, they aren't blowing smoke up your wahzoo. They're simply stating a fact. They really do perform & stand up to all the claims made about them.

A little insight to customer service. When I first bought my Airfoil Z Yak it arrived missing just a couple minor parts that if need be I could have taken care of at the local hardware store for just a couple bucks, but I called Paul on the phone to tell him about it. He was very apoligetic about the minor snafu @ insisted on overnighting the parts to me along with some extra hardware packs just to make sure I was squared away in case I was to break or loose something in the assembly process I would have some spare parts to cover my mistakes with. To me that's pretty good customer service! I've allways fully understood that there is no such thing as a perfect company & production. There are allways going to be some small problems or mistakes made occasionally regardless of who your doing business with. The important part to me is how a company handles & responds to the minor snafu when they do occur. Airfoil Z took better care of me than any other company I've done business with yet to date. Including shooting me the Edge 540 the very next month.[sm=wink_smile.gif].

I say you absolutely can't go wrong with an Airfoil Z purchase. I hope this gives you some insight to what you can expect from Airfoil Z & the excellent people running the company, they've have earned my respect & business for life. Good luck to you & your decision, have a ball with it!!

Tim will be there, I'm in China at the factory. I'm not sure where you will find him, but keep an eye out. I don't know if the shipment made it on time, but I know he'll have a Woody and possibly a couple Stiffys to check out. At any rate, they'll be available very soon.

how high a wind and gusts can the airfoilz edge be flown comfortably in? most foamies can handle 10 mph winds with 17 mph gusts. after that the foamies are more in a battle to keep control than an enjoyable flight.

I own the Stiffy and it is a great plane. Flies in strong wind with ease ( 20 mph gusts.) very stable and smooth to fly. I wil probably always have one in the line up.

The Airfoilz are comfortable at 20-25 MPH winds. The Airfoilz team pilots were the only ones flying at the Arizona funfly besides Chip Hide flying the first day do to the winds.

Yup, I had a blast flying at the Arizona! I'm looking forward to going back next year for some more fun! The Airfoilz planes are hard to beat! They have out performed anything else I've flown in that size range.

Here is our new stiffy and it is by far the strongest foamy on the market. Super quick build time, less than an hour, CF motor mount, CF twin beams in the fuse, lightning holes through out, anodized landing gear and silk screened finish. No Stickers!!! All up is 18oz.

Cheers,

For all you stiffy's out there.... Having some trouble with CG, on the new extra stiffy. I am following the directions which say between 5 and 5 1/2 from the leading edge of the wing and the fuselage and it does not seem to be right. The plane is very stappy and does not want to fly right... Any suggestions?

We have a full line of planes as you can see here at http://airfoilz.com/products/index.html we have many new models coming out, and the nice thing about "stickers" is you call me and I will cut out what you like, so you can have a unique looking Airfoilz not a cookie cutter plane. OH ya and Airfoilz are MADE IN THE GREAT USA!

Default RE: Airfoilz or Copperhead Stiffy?

I've had first generation Stiffy's and an Airfoilz Edge. The first stiffy I had built up light and was VERY durable, absorbing all the punishment my flying skills could dish out for a couple hundred flights. When it finally got to beat up to fly, I ordered a Yak Stiffy. This one came with a bowed fuse and was substantially heavier than my first plane. I did fly it for quite a while, but it was never quite as good as the first one. When the Yak was dead, I ordered an Airfoilz Yak. This plane is much more of a kit build than the Stiffy's, but builds up light and straight. Unfortunatley on about my fifth flight, a very low very slow biff left me with a busted fuse. This type of cartwheel wouldn't have fazed my Stiffy. I tried laminating some extra balsa on top of the fuse spar where it split, but it split again ahead of my repair.

My conclusion, they both fly well, but if you are looking for something durable to work on your low-level 3D skillsm go with the Stiffy!

I have not flown the gen 2 stiffy, I ordered one last week and am anxious for it's arrival.

Yep I agree, just like a balsa ARF, Airfoilz are not as indestructible, but than again, I guess by the time you start flying 3-d crashing is few and far between. Now I wish somone whould make a crash worthy helicopter for "learing" 3-D. .

Get an Airfoilz - planes that crash well generally don't fly well. We are on our second Airfoilz Yak54, very nice flying. We flew #1 dozens of times and put it in low and slow a few times no problem.

Plus what's up with the name "Copperhead Stiffy"? Sounds like the name of a porn star or some ED product.

Well, I don't know anything about the Copperhead products (except that I agree about the names), but I can highly recommend the Airfoilz. They are a ridiculously-good flying plane, and mine has withstood a fair bit of punishment so far without any real consequence. Rather in line with what Paul said, I wish my TREX could take this kind of abuse.

Just my $.02,
- Chaz

I don't expext an airplane to be indestructable, but the crash that broke my plane's fuse was a low-speed, power-off cartwheel from about 4' of altitude. The spar in the fuse split length-wise so I had to open up the fuse and laminate a piece of balsa on top of it. That added weight and the split progressed further no matter how gently i handled the airplane. Maybey I got one with a bad spar, I dunno. My first Stiffy flew every bit as good as the Airfoilz, and survived my practice biffs much better. I use my foamy to hone my skills on maneuvers I have yet to try with my 29% Edge so mishaps are inevitable.

I've been flying my new Copper head Stiffy (2nd gen) for some time now, really enjoy the way it flys, tracks very well does all 3D moves very well. The Airfoilz Edge(which i have also)also is a great flying 3D plane. As to which one is best, nothing is best, they are two different airplanes, some might like one more then the other just like power set up,whats best........................................it all would depend on your flying style and what you like ect.Bottom line is both are great 3D planes.Olin

Have an ax to grind do you??

"Planes that crash well generally don’t fly well” Wrong!!! That statement is subjective and without merit, explain your opinion as I would like to learn about this?. Enjoy your Airfoilz!

"Plus what's up with the name "Copperhead Stiffy"? Sounds like the name of a porn star or some ED product". HAHA, that’s a funny one liner!!

cheers,

Well I am the one that posted this forum and I own a Copperhead Extra Stiffy and recently purchase a Airfoilz Yak 54.They both fly nice. The Airfoilz will not take the abuse that the Copperhead takes. The Copperhead assembles a lot faster and you are up and flying. The only problem I had with the Copperhead was where they recomended the CG.Was too tail heavy and I had no luck on contacting them on the problem. After dumping it in the ground numerous times I got it all trim out with no damage. The Airfoilz I ripped a control horn out of the elevator and ended up breaking the fuslage in a numerous places.Got it repaired, but that crash would not of hurt the Copperhead. They are both fun to fly.

Glad you got both flying, keep practicing your flying pretty soon, you won't need a indestructible plane, and you'll be flying like the big guys. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ig7yqBFqLHQ

I'll keep on flying.I fly above a hay field and when I do get in a bad situation I back out of it and let it glide in the hay.Unwrap the hay out of it and fly again. It seems like when I have these mishaps is when the hay has just got cut! Never fails no cushion then. Anyway I was out flying the Airfoilz this morning and it still flies nice.I am impressed how the Airfoilz will pull out of a bad situation.Easy to fly.Need to just check out my plane a little closer before I fly.I had another plane that I ran these HS 65 servos on that ripped out a servo horn. I will have to order another Airfoilz down the road for a back up. I have a dozen planes hanging on the wall that I don't care to fly any more after flying the Airfoilz and Copperhead Stiffy. My Showtime is just sitting on the shelf too! I have more of a blast flying electrics than the glow and a lot cheaper!!
