Default Dragon Models 49" Sukhoi 26EP build thread...

I'm finally getting enough free time in my schedule to start building this airplane. It's been sitting on my table staring at me for a few days now. I invite suggestions from more experienced builders and 3D fliers as to mods, power systems, setup, assembly techniques, etc. Feel free to ask any questions about the Sukhoi.

Here are a few basics:

Wing Span: 49"
Length: 47"
Wing Area: 465 sq in
Flying wt: 2.3-2.5 lbs

Laser cut balsa and light ply interlocking construction.
Carbon fiber wing tube and control horns
Pull-pull control system for the rudder
Magnetic hatch cover
Steerable tail wheel
Painted fiberglass wheel pants
All hardware

Unpacking the parts:

Like most ARFs coming out of the Far East these days, the Sukhoi comes 95% built, fully covered with painted fiberglass parts. Each component is individually wrapped in its own cello bag and carefully secured in the box to protect it during shipping. The fuselage is held in its own cradle keeping it away from the sides of the box to prevent any damage. The wings are taped to a floating cardboard platform keeping them at least 1.5 inches from the side of the box. All in all, well though out packaging.

Initial Inspection:

After verifying all parts are present and accounted for, the covering is gone over looking for areas that might require a quick facelift with the iron and heat gun. Luckily, this particular models covering is still pretty tight so just a few minor touch-ups with the iron are all that were needed.

Okay next installment...

Life just seems to get in the way of my fun sometimes. I'll have more time to focus on this Sukhoi after the holidays I hope..

Just a little test fitting of the parts today to get idea of the size. Very nice lines in my opinion but a little hard to see in the pics due to the dark undersurface.

The tinted canopy is a nice touch. Something I would have done myself.

Parts fit very nicely together. Vertical and horizontal stabs seem to be perpendicular. I'll check them later when it comes time glue them on.

I haven't had the chance to put the parts on a scale to get weights. Let me know if you guys are actually interested knowing what the weight is.

I'll get the glue and tools out when I get back into town and really get to work on this...

Now that the holidays are finally over, I can get back to what I really enjoy.

I'm deviating slightly from the manual but only in the order things are accomplished.

My preference is to get the plane up on the gear to stabilize the fuse and to make the airplane a little easier to move around.

All parts are laid out for the main and tail wheels. Gear legs are anodized aluminum but are also offered in carbon fiber for an additional charge.

Wheels are light weight foam pieces but nice and firm. I don't expect these to flat-spot as easily as some I've used in the past.

Axles are slid through the main wheels and are fixed to the mains with nylock nuts.

Gear is secured to a plywood plate in the fuse using four 3mm screws and blind nuts.

Gear is bolted up in just a few minutes.

Wheel pants are aligned, drilled and screwed to the mains.

The Sukhoi is nearly standing on its own in less that 15 minutes

Next comes the tailwheel assembly. Nicely executed item.

Just center the tailwheel bracket, mark and drill the holes.

Install using the supplied screws.

Next is the hinging of the control surfaces with the supplied CA hinges.

Nothing out of the ordinary here. Just insert, align, and glue.

I've never heard of Dragon Models. The pics look like it's a put together well, but where do you look at getting this at? I did a google search for it, but it came up with nothing. If you have know their website please let me know.

It's looking good. Keep us posted.

Tail-group is next….pretty simple stuff. All the hard parts have been done by the factory.

Insert and align the vertical stab. Mark and trim the covering to expose the wood for a solid bond.

I used a soldering iron with a special tip to minimize the possibility of scoring and weakening the wood underneath the covering.

Horizontal stab is next...

Same procedure as the vertical stab. Only difference is the alignment.

Measure twice, glue once.

So far, this part has taken the most time. Not a lot of time though. Everything has gone together very quickly so far.

Control surface hinging next...

As with the wings, pretty simple stuff.

Some of the pre-cut slots for the hinges are a little off but not enough to bind the controls.

Insert, align, and glue.

Very Nice Sukhoi. Where did you get it at? Can't wait to see this done.

The website is currently under contruction. I got a pre-release model to play around with along with some other neat gadets. The Sukhoi should be ready for public consumption in about a month. I've got my name on the list for some other pre-release planes as well.

Final installments of this build/assembly.

To finish up the airframe, all that was required was to install the motor box.

Motor box is pre assembled with offset built-in. 6 Slide-locking tabs secure it to the forward bulkhead.

Included triangle stock to stiffen bulkhead to motor box junction.

Phenolic/plywood firewall pre-drilled to fit most outrunner motors.

Airscoops for efficient cooling.

Control system installation...

With the airframe finished, all that is left is the power and control system.

Very nice carbon fiber control horns come with the Sukhoi. Pull pull system for the rudder shown.

Slots are precut into all control surfaces. Just a sharp razor to open up the holes.

A little adhesive to keep them in place and...

PRESTO!!!

I see that Cermark is carrying these as well as a Extra 260.

Here are the sites:
49" Sukhoi 26 => http://www.cermark.net/List.php?TID=85 (or visit cermark.com under new arrival)
49" Extra 260 => http://www.cermark.net/List.php?TID=84 (or under cermark.com new arrival)
49" edge 540 => http://www.cermark.net/List.php?TID=88 (or under cermark.com new arrival)

Recommended motors:
Neo 10, Power 10 or Hacker A30-14L

Recommended battery packs
Amped Up 2100mah 25C 3s or Thunder Power 2200 Extreme V2 25C 3s

Servos (Hitec or similar)
1 x HS81 or HS82 + 3 HS-65 (we noticed that non-metal gear version are just as good). Note: HS-81s are being replaced by HS-82.

Props (APC - E version or similar)
11x6, 12x6, 13x4 or 13x6.5 (each prop will give you slightly different feel vertically and horizontally, elevation, humidity, and heat will all come into play for your 3D machine).

Additional recommendation (others can add to this list)
1) Scotch tape the canopy down to the fuse, because the magnets are sometimes not strong enough to hold in place during negative manuvers. However a nice light latch from 3D Hobby Shop will also do nicely. There are screws recomended to hold the canopy in place, but after on/off a few times, that wood area is not designed for that purpose.
2) couple of the pilots noticed that motor mount is a little weak. So here is what one of the pilot did when mounting the NEO-10 motor in. He use the aluminium mount + notched out area around the box so that the aluminum X mount can fit + drilled additional holes so that more screws can be used for a more secure mount.

note: pictures are generously provided by Carl Maas Sr.

Peace,
Steven Chao,
Cermark
