Default Motor for 3DHS 47" SHP?

Any thoughts on this Scorpion motor for the SHP? Looks to have more power than the Torque 2818-900, but also weighs about 2 oz more. http://www.rcdude.com/servlet/the-12...ushless/Detail

Randy, at RCDude is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Drop him an email with you question. Bet he will have some good input. I have Scorpions of two of my acft. They perform WELL.

You will LIKE the SHP. No, mine does not have a Scorpion on it.

I too have a Scorpion in an EF Extra, it's been a great motor. Randy's actually the one who recommended the setup I inquired about in the 3DHS SHP. My only concern with the extra 2 oz would be balancing it for 3d. Looks like the battery bay is large enough to allow the battery to slide back quite a bit in order to help out.

That motor will work, but for the SHP to really shine for 3D, you want to keep it as light as possible. The extra 2 oz. will be noticable compared to a lighter motor.

If you want to spend a bit less, the Turnigy SK 35-36 1000kv, or the bigger 35-42 will give you more than enough power. I've been running my Acro Master with the 35-42 and it has nearly unlimited vertical on 3s and a 12x6. You can easily prop bigger as long as the ESC is strong enough. I'm running about 50-55A static with that setup.

My 2cents, it's too heavy and won't really let the plane shine. 3.6-4.25 oz. is a nice range for good 3D performance on a 3s power system. I have the 2818 in mine at 3.67oz and it flies fantastic.

If I were you I'd try and stick with a motor around the 104 gms level like the Torque, I use the Hacker A30-16m which is around the same weight and it still needs a small amount of tail weight to get the plane absolutely balanced and hands off for inverted flight.
