retiming ? on GWS EPS-350C-DX
 
Hi Guys,I'm new at the electric 3D flying. I have a Ultimate Bipe ready fro the electrics (servos,speedcontrol, etc) I have been told I need to retime the motor before I install it and break the motor in under water. Can someone help with these two things.

Hi,

There is a lot of articles describing how to time a motor on this site and other sites. I think all the motors are timed in the same manner.

I would suggest you do a search on this site first, then explore the above site for both the under water break in and timing.

i,d double check that the 350 motor needs retiming...after trying it on one of mine with less than desirable results, i don,t think it needs it..... any one know if it,s only the 300 or 370s that need retiming ?? rob m

Hi,

I was kinda wondering this myself. I ordered a Formosa from GWS and thought I should time it as per wveryone's recommendation. It seemed to be at the best setting when I received it. Does anyone know if GWS is now timing these motors?

Also, I found the biggest motor power improvement for these motors was to add extra batteries. I now fly with an Aerobird upgrade pack (7 cells) and add one extra to bring it up to 8 cells or 9.6 volts. It made a big difference on the P51D Mustang and Formosa before I went brushless.

The GWS 300 and 350 gear drives use motors that are setup for direct drive (improperly timed). Both should be retimed to improve peformance and increase brush life. A quick way is to use a new pair of small needle nose (sharp teeth on jaws) and grab the rear bearing housing rotating it against the motors rotation, 3/16 is usually enough.

i was told today to move the backing plate 7mm clockwise with snapring pliers. this sounds the same mikerjf replied

It also varies with the motors. I've had some that don't seem to respond to retiming. I usually hook the motor up to four cells and listen to the forward and reverse rpms, turn the backplate until they're the same then go another3/32.

The 350 does not require timing, i've found that on my 300, the best results are at 7mm clockwise.

Ah! clockwise from the rear is "against (contrary too) the motors rotation IN THE GEARED CONDITION".

Am I right?

I did a little experimentation with my 350C in a C gear box. I used 2S 2100 Li-Poly pack and a GWS 9x7 prop. Stock I got 4500 RPM at 6 amps. I retimed it using my amp meter and 2 AA batteries. Stock the 2 AA's pulled .65 amps (no load). I turned the back plate about 4 mm clockwise till the amp meter read .78 amps. After connecting everything back up, I got 5000 RPM at 8.5 amps. I hope this helps. It sure gave my Mustang some extra zing.

There is another here in RC Universe in a thread titled Timing GWS 370 motor - a step-by-step tutorial by Peter Khor. The motor is called a 370 by Mabuchi.

An update on my experiment: After 4 or 5 flights with my Mustang the LVC started to kick in on steep climbs. I brought back down and checked the amp draw. 10 amps! I started with the new motor. I am not sure why it suddely wanted to draw more amps. The RPM stayed about he same as before. This won't do, so, a new experiment? I had and old 300 motor sitting around. From what I have heard the 300 has a lower rpm per volt than than the 350 and has retared timing. So, I adjusted the timing for neutral. Should be the most effiecient right? Then I put it in a "B" gear box. Who uses those? Guess what. 5200 RPM at 8 amps. Even better. Of couse this was a new motor, so I expected the amps to rise. After 2 10 minute flights, I check again. RMP still the same, but the amps rose to 9. Still not bad though. Its low enough so that my LVC doesn't kick in and my stang kicks butt. I didn't have time for more flights, but Ill let you know what happens. BTW I am using a CC esc with the cutt off voltage at 6 volts.

I retimed the motor in my 350c. Apparently the 350 does need retiming, as it is set at 0 degrees so it will work ok in either dierection. I rotated the back plate just 1/8" or less. I can't say for sure that it helped or hurt. I would like to set up a test of amp draw vs thrust, and try several different settings and find out for sure.

Ya I am still using the 2S 2100. I also built a 2s 1300 Irate battery too. Both work good, you just get less time with the 1300.

LOADING--did it real close. From what I have heard, the 350's should be checked because they are 0 timed....They run the same either way. You want to ADVANCE the timing so it revs higher, and pulls slightly more power, in the right direction for the prop. The 300's and 370's were timed for direct drive props, not gear drive, where the motor has to turn backwards from direct drive. Some have actualy has less draw and much more power retimed. The motors were that "retarded".......
