3D Power System Setup
I'm requesting help in determining what power system components are required for the CAP-232 from www.3dfoamy.com.
I'm new to electrics and I'm trying to use MotoCalc 7 to configure a motor/controller/prop combination (direct driveor geared) that will produce approximately 20oz of thrust and run for 20 minutes on a 3 cell Li-po pack. So far I have too many variables and too many combinations to understand what configuration I need. My plane has shipped and I want to get the motor/controller/battery on the way.. I'm thinking of using the following: Hobby Lobby - JESA18 Jeti Advance 18 Amp Brushless Controller Hobby Lobby - AXI 221234 external rotor brushless motor Thunder Power 1950 3 cell Li-po battery pack Prop? or www.maxxprod.com - Himax Brushless Motors w/Offset Gearbox (gear ratio?) Hobby Lobby - JESA18 Jeti Advance 18 Amp Brushless Controller Thunder Power 1950 3 cell Li-po battery pack Prop? I don't understand how to fully use MotoCalc! Is there anyone willing to make suggestions on what brushless motor, gearbox, controller, and prop that will make the CAP-232 a great flier? I'm guessing the deprin CAP-232 will weigh 10-12 oz prior to installing the power system/radio components. Thanks Garry |
RE: 3D Power System Setup
2212/34 and 18A ESc sound like good choices for a 11-12oz plane. However the cells sound a bit on the large side. I guess you went for 1950's because you wanted to be sure they could source sufficient current. I'd have thought you'd be OK with something like TP1300's or even some of the 10-15C 830-850 cells.
I've found the best way (though Motocalc is good) to find the right motor/prop/cells is to read about all the other 3D planes and see what works for other people on a 3D plane of about the same weight - not just a specific model like the CAP232. There are loads of 10-12oz 3D foam designs out there! I'm building a Southern SX2 EPP plane which is "similar" to that CAP232 and it certainly looks like the AXI 2212/34 (or sometimes /26) is the motor of choice for this size of plane while, for the smaller "shocky" kind of 6-8oz planes most are using the AXI 2208/34 (though I'm using a PJS300 and actually find that pretty good too) Cliff |

What about a 9oz plane w/o batts (advertised) What AXI will perform better? or any other engine out there?

RE: 3D Power System Setup
I have 2 friends with the same size/wt foamy plane but the Extra version and I have one on order.
They are using the following setup and seldom use but never NEED more than about 1/2 throttle. Himax 4100 Brushless Motor GWS6.6:1 gearbox w/adaptor plate Castle Creations Phoenix 25 speed controller 3cell (3S1P) 1200mah LiPo battery pack. You can get everything you need at www.allerc.com and several other places. Both are really satisfied with this setup and I am really excited about getting mine in the air. Mike PS Be sure to readup on LiPo battery packs they are safe and eficient but very different from NiCad and NiMH batteries. Really need to be extra sure to get the right battery charger. |

What about a razor 350 motor
