E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
hi everybody,
anyone have tried the e flite ultimate by george hicks form horizon hobby? what kind of engine are u using on it? the axi 22080/34 works ok on it??? pushrods and linkages and horns are included in the kit??? any videos on this plane? thanks;) |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Yelp My father got his last friday and put ti together sunday.it comes with all the hardware you need and he used the Himax 2015-4100 motor and castle creations 25 speed controller same set up fancyfoam.com uses on his planes since we have 4 of his planes and they that set up works great, also useing the hitec hs-55 servos and eletron receiver he gets about 15 min flight times 3d flying
Oh If you buy tis plane.dont use the stock locations to hook the top and bottom ailrons together you need to reloacate them to about the middle of the wing cause where they have them at they bind.the top moves more then the bottom one.or i might have that backwards dont shot me.but it doesnt work very well thats the only problem with this plane oh also the elevator has a cheep pice of balsa to join the 2 elevator havles and it doesnt line up completely stright. it hope this helps you out good luck. |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Oh yeah No video comes with the kit.nor I dont know anyplace to get one sorry.
|
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
There are videos of the 3DX. A very similar plane.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
put an axi 220834 on one last night. havnt flown it yet, but pulls like crazy on 3 cells. hs55 servos, gws rx, jeti speed control. i agree about the ailerons, however, the elevator joiner works fine. just clamp both elevator halves level to the stab when you glue it on.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
flew the bipe today with axi 2208/34. doesnt pull like a geared brushless, but planty of power. accelerates vertical. foamies are easy to overpower if you dont mind spending 3x the cost of the plane to do it. i dont mind though!

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
I'm happy if I can hover. I still can't believe electric planes can do this. Not long ago it was just a dream.
|
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
If anybody has some pics of there setup on the bipes I would like to see them. Any of the Aileron servo mounting would be great.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
I bought the Ultimate last week and love it. I used the EFLITE brushless 400 with a GWS 11x4.7 prop and a Castle Creations Phoenix 25 speed control. I used Hitec 55 servos and a JR 610 rec. You have to put some down and right thrust in this plane or it will only go up when you throttle it. I would place the servos a couple of inches further back than the inst. call for, It comes out a little nose heavy. The ailerons never gave me any trouble, they're differential ailerons.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
i bought one of these a couple of days ago, looks like fun and i can do this at home or just about anywhere.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
I would be glad to put pics on here but My camera is sent off to be fixed and my fathers pc is broke so cant use his.if i get it back monday or so like Im supposed to ill take pics to show everyone how he did his.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
it is deffinitely going to balance bad with a 400 on the nose. also, unless your servos have very long arms, they wont reach through the fuse. mount them in the same place on opposite sides of the fuse and make som stad-offs for the pushrod with zip ties. about 3-4per side works well.

Hideho all,
Well got the maiden done, flights 1&2. Hovered and torquerolled like a top, half throttle like everyone else. man what a plane, love it. Found that like others you DO NOT just pull back the throttle and let her glide in....gotta keep a wee bit O throttle to flair and then just a smidge more to get a perfect 3 pointer at touchdown....fantastic roll rate, snaps clean and on a dime, inside and outside. Himax/Eflite brushless is a must..no foolin, MUST! Ballistic uplines....on one of my landing attempts I flaired too early and it popped straight up..at about 3 feet and a schootch above idle....thought, here we go, my first nose in...nailed the throttle, bamm! vertical like it left skid marks in the air right in front of me...Whew, glad I had the brushless... Now for the less than stellar news... Same problem, inverted and the plane hooks up...All motor/gearbox.fuse squared away..dead nuts on. Zero-zero incidence. battery where Mikes is, everything else located the saME, box stock. balanced perfect...from 1/3rd throttle straight and level, floorboarded throttle just boot scoots straight ahead, no climb or sink. Roll invert, immeadiatly climbs...fast. 6.6 ratio D gearing, 12X6 Eflite prop. Motor barely warm after 8 mins or so. Didn't try knife edge as it was nearly dark as it was and I'm flying in a cauldosac... Tomorrow Am I'm going to add downthrust and give it another go. Even if it won't mix or adjust out the plane is still a keeper, for me. Can't believe how easy it hovers/torquerolls...just a blip of throttle and bam it's outta site. no expo, max everywhere....need a new 66 tooth gear already..going to have to order a few of them...heheheh. Rolls like a drill, which is just what I wanted...both ways. Beautifull inverted flat spins..no throttle tho...obviously. Power off and it sinks like a aerodynamic rock... ok, not that bad but you get the idea...keep the power on at all times.... What a perfect little plane, so far...my first foamy/brushless so take my comments with a grain of salt...just like your first flights with a brushless..all you can say is DAMN! Thanks to all for your comments and help. Will advise how the downthrust helps... Best to you all, Mike |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Eflight 370 brushless is a perfect match...same as the Himax...just toss the stock motor.
Too windy this AM to fly....Kokam 3 cell 1350 HD (high discharge) is like flyin it on Nitros. Castle Creations 25 A brushless speed control. I added a wee bit of tri stock under the wing and ele for better support. Tied nylon string to the landing gear to prevent splay. Don't even try the stock motor..I did and it was a waste of time...barely flew. Good luck, |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Rich,
I heard from greg you got the same 3660 gear box and motor I got, except my dumb butt got them in two different shipments because I didn't know the himaxx motor didn't fit the original mount. You saved about 15$ over buying them separately. Is the gear box nice? Greg said you said the stock one wasn't very good, how does the himaxx look? |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
himax gear box rocks out. super smooth and quiet, plus cool heatsink motor mount. just tried it out. hi max 2015-4100, 6.6to1, 12x6 prop. great performance.

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
iceman, did you get the 4100 or 54oo motor? use the 12x6 on the 4100, and the 10x4.7 on the 5400.
|
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
I got the 4100 motor and the aluminum gear box that you got today

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
flew my Tribute today....Himax 5400 gwsd drive..etec 1200mah 3 cell...it flew great, kept tork rolling even when it was a little windy for it...second flight I didnt notice the elevator trim got bumped forward...you know what happened soon as I tossed it...straight into the ground breaking the carbon rod that the hardwood motor block was mounted to....SO NOW TO MY QUESTION.. Who has done the same and has a slick fix or improvement modification to mount the motor...I would like to keep the spruce wood mount for convience in mounting the m otor and changing motors...Thanks for any help

RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Just throwing out my 2c:
Mine is set up with Razor 400 GWS based D geared 12x6 prop Phoenix 25 controller I have about 6 flights on it so far, too windy to assess its full capability... Set up with extreme care, took a few days to put it all together - some things to note: Building Found that the ailerons are just fine in the stock location, but you have to be really careful with the keeper thingys or they will bind on the control horn. Simple dremel grind on the control horn took care of it. Glued both aileron servos to the bottom of the wing. The depron is too thick for even my longest control horn to make it through like the instructions say. I cut out the foam in the shape of the servo, leaving only the membrane on the opposite side, then glued the servo into the hole - worked like a champ. The balsa on the tail is fine, just take your time glueing the elevator half to it or you can end up crooked - a carbon tube would have been better, but some thin CA wicked into the balsa and its plenty tough. There's no cross bracing on the motor mount - my razor about torqued the carbon tube out of the fuselage. Ended up wrapping a piece of strapping tape around the nose, on the tail of the motor so the bottom carbon piece helps keep it from twisting. Its a so-so fix for now, I'll have to think of a better way. The gear is kind of a pain to install, but on the bright side, it works very well - I pancaked a couple of times and its holding up really well, so I guess its worth the effort. Overall, the build gets an A- in my book, the instructions could certainly use a few more pictures as thier description of some steps is lacking. Beyond that it goes together really nice, way better than a shock flyer. Flying (this is my initial feeling I hope the wind calms some, I may have nicer things to say about it) Flies OK on 2 cells (will hover, but pulls out slow), 3 cells its very nicely powered (ie yanks it like a baloon in a tornado) This airplane is an absolute handful in the wind. Compared to Shockflyer in wind, Shocky flies way better. Roll rate stinks, but rolls are very axial. Hovers, torque rolls, harriers, and elevators are outstanding. Barely has enough aileron to keep a hover, even think about letting the aileron out and 3 torque rolls will happen before you can stop them again Its is extremely CG sensitive. Small changes in CG make HUGE changes in flight performance. I like the way it flies best either at or about 1/4 inch forward of the recommended location. It gets real squirelly inverted behind the rec loc, and its near impossible to fly in anything but a hover Knife edge - the worst pitch coupling of any airplane I've flown except the UCD 60, and probably worse than that.... Waiting for calmer day to see if there is enough elevator to mix it out. amazingly, there is little or no roll coupling. Spins and snaps are OK, should be outstanding if I can get the pitch coupling under control. The best thing I have to say about it is that its built very tough. Stick it in a tree, pancake, ground loop, absolutely no damage. This one may last a long time - typical for those airplanes that dont fly well ;) Overall, it gets a C- for flying. I may change my mind after I get it up without any wind and figure out what is causing the pitch coupling. I'd be lying if I said I wasnt disappointed, maybe my expectations were too high.... <shrug> Roger |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
...just finished mine with the Park 400 brushless kv4200 motor and phoenix 25 ESC. I haven't flown it yet due to windy days but I'm looking forward to it. I agree with moving the servos for rudd & elev back. It's just a hair nose heavy with the 3C 11.1 LiPo. I'm new to electrics and I'm a little concerned about weight. The advertised flying weight minus battery is 9.0oz...mine came in at 15.4oz with the 3C LiPo. Any thoughts on this?
|
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
Whats the capacity of your battery? I think they recomend 1320mah, if its more than that you could always buy a smaller battery pack to reduce some weight.
This is quite minute, but you could also eliminate those little brass connectors that conect the pushrod to the servo arm. I didnt use them on mine, I just made z-bends because it makes it easier to remove the servos (if you need to). |
RE: E-FLITE ULTIMATE,by GEORGE HICKS!
I am using a 3S1P Kokam 11.1V Li-Po.

Here's a few pics of mine. Setup is Himax 2015/4100, Phoenix 10, Berg5, Blue Bird 306s, and Apogee 1050. I did the aileron linkage a different way and works great. Great flying plane.
