Shock flyer build tips

If anyone would be so kind as to list any tips or mod's to make my first one go better. I did a search and did not see a Shockflyer build thread. I'd like to not make the mistakes most people make on their first one. I always read that someone will do the 2nd one much better or it will take much less time on the 2nd one.

I've used RCU for build tips before and they are right on.

thanks for any tips you can give me. Just brief pointers would be great too.

This is what I bought:
Shockflyer 330S kit
AXI 2208-34
Jeti 8 amp motor controller
Apogee 2 cell, 830mah
CF firewall
Electron 6 rx
HS-55 servos

just a small thing, when taping ur surfaces, use the normal tape but get a coverign iron on med heat and heat over the taped tape. it makes it stick forever.

strengthen the bottom of the fuz under the motor mount. this will break iwht constant nosing overs

If you choose to leave the UC off, which i did cos it was slowly breakign. cut the CF just after the rubber gromet. this keeps strength that the UC makes

Get rid of the wheels, these are fit for the bin unless ur indoors

Just my opinions
Ian

RE: Shock flyer build tips

er, these are a few things I have learnt after building 4, or is it 5?

I find it easyer to put the tape over the leading and trailing edge carbon spars as you go along instead of after the whole thing is on. it doesnt matter much but it stops little gaps between the wing and the spars.

for the hinges I put a lines of tape top and bottom of the surfaces, but not going over the edge. Then when I hinge the surfaces it acts as if the tape was 2 times the width cause it sticks better to itself than it does to shockflyers. havnt tried a covering iron, thort id melt something.

Make sure you reinforce the front end alot because that is always the thing that gets nocked most. I have lost count of the number of times I break motors off.

The fuselage above and below the wing always breaks, I never bother to reinforce it from the start and end up having to do something ugly on it later.

I put strings on mine to stop the fuselage twisting, also I have made the ailerons and rudder bigger because I rekon it flies better.

thats all I can think of at the moment in building, just dont go flying it round your living room like an idiot. especially not on the test flight.

hope this is some use,

Thomas

Joe, you need to do a search again, there is an extensive ( Long ) thread called somethinglike ( shockflyer assy. ) with mega tips on shockflyer construction.

Search profile fun fly section and 3d section along with this section.

Mabey someone else can point you too it.

My Shocky/Raptor money got spent this week on 2 Glow planes too good and cheap to refuse, Burritto and Taco fat free within 7 days from 2 different fields/friends both kit/scrath built covered. and Servoed. Sooo looks like Shocky and Raptor will have to wait a few months :-(.

Good luck, Dennis

Shock flyer build tips

I read the other post, but still have a question. I am on the step where you glue the two horizontal fuse pieces together and then put the wing on. I'm building the Super Star. I don't know why, but I am really stopped at this step[:@]
What the heck do the instructions mean when they say 15mm for the SuperStar? 15mm from what, and what goes there?
Does the wing go on the top or bottom of the horizontal piece? I hate when I can't understand the instructions...
Thanks for any help_bob

well the wing goes on the bottom of the horizontal fues. also the 15 mm back part you are asking about is a little bit hard to describe in writing but the seam on the fues and the back edge of the cut out in the wing are what it is talking about hope this helps once again it is a little bit hard to explain it

Had the same problem but finally fingered it out. Where the front and back fuse halfs join together is where you measure from. 15mm ahead of that, make a horiontal line. The square hole in the wing lines up with that line. Hope this helps.

RE: Shock flyer build tips

Those instructions are way over-simplified for a first-time foamy builder. The second one will go much smoother I'm sure.

I used a trim iron to secure all the tape. I heat it until the color under the tape darkens, that's when I know the tape glue has sunk into the foam really well.
